The totally off-topic thread

Office discussion and Im surprised the number of people that dont know their blood type, especially women who have had children.

Im B- and hubby is AB-, both rare Im told.

In reality it does not matter if you know your blood type. This is because no Dr would rely a patient's assertion that their blood type is x. Get it wrong could mean death.

The only people who would get away with a wrong blood type are the Oneg.

Had a patient who gave birth. She was Rh-. She said her partner was also Rh-. (if mother is Rh- then anti D injection is given so I think she was thinking she did not need it). But the baby was Rh+
Apparently partner was indeed Rh- but obviously not the father......

.....
In Australia
In descending order of "rareness" IIRC:
O,A,B,AB

Rh- is rarer than Rh+

I think O+ is about 45% of pop
AB- is the rarest - <1% of pop

Geographical differences exist. For example Asian countries O- is extremely rare 1% or less. whereas in OZ its about 10%.

I am type B but RH E positive. So an RH negative blood recipient but RH positive blood donor.Incidence just under 1% of Type Bs.

Similar experience with a young woman who had an autosomal recessive genetic disorder.Didn't know mum but dad was a double negative for the gene.Impressed myself with an immediate response-"you obviously have a spontaneous mutation.'

The biscuits are pretty good as well according to some celebrity chefs

Though the mobile blood trucks that visit universities don't use biscuits. They found that their hit rate increased remarkably when they introduced pizzas!

Oh and some public service employers have "Blood donation leave". Worth checking your EA especially some universities

What a terrible way to find out.

Not sure if this is "Off topic", "Grammar Discussions" or "Humour" but "The Age" at the moment has a headline about the closure of the Murray Goulburn book binding factory ...... oh wait, why is there a picture of a cow?...........

Isn't the story about the closure of the dairy?

Isn't the story about the closure of the dairy?

Headline suggests they're closing a diary (a book in which you write your thoughts), not a dairy (a place where milk is produced or processed). Sloppy or non-existent proof reading by sub-editors.

My bad. Indeed. Diary it is.

The partner did not find out because the treatment (antiD) really had nothing to do with him. (D-P Confidentiality). Didnt tell the new mother either - just told her for some reason the baby was Rh+ so needed anti D.:)

So the father is unaware he has been cuckolded?
And the mother doesn't know she has been caught cheating?

What an ethical dilemma for those involved. I hope the father never finds out and that the relationship lasts. However if it does fail and he seeks a DNA test then surely he would have grounds to sue for deceit by the mother.

At the least he won't (generally) have to pay child support. However, he will probably be emotionally distressed.

Im sure the mother knew from the way we broached the subject. We just did not say it directly: "Hey your baby is Rh+ that means your partner is not the father". Ethically no dilemma as mother and baby got correct treatment and we had no treating relationship with partner. As far as we were concerned he was just a visitor

....Or is he the father now?.... because he was involved in the relationship, pregnancy and birth and the ongoing relationship with newborn?......
