Last time I tried to give blood, I was told my iron levels were too low and to see a doctor. My doctor told me my iron levels were almost non existent and still working on it.

I wouldnt donate just because they paid me for it. I find that just.... nope, not good for a society where people are paid to donate blood products to save or maintain peoples lives.

I have haemochromatosis and donate to get rid of the damn stuff (iron).

This was one of the options for hubby as his iron was crazy high but it seems to have settled down again. His chiro suspected the iron issue

I recently started going through my family history to find out more about my ancestors. My grandpa (dad's side) did extensive research on his side so I have a somewhat complete set of names going back to 1620. So far I discovered that my great x3 grandfather fought in the French Revolutionary War! He was on the HMS Mars for this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Raz_de_Sein
It's not clear if he was on the same ship when it was involved in the Spithead mutiny the year before or whether he was on the same ship at the Battle of Trafalgar a few years later. Wow, crazy stuff.

Info about my dad's mum's side and my mum's mum's side will require some digging. My mum's dad's side is interesting though (also a naval background).

From someone who has been in the 'business' for 25 years ... you know not to believe anything that individuals post on the internet, don't you? Ancestry.com and regrettably these days, even the Latter Day Saints site are some of the worst places for family history garbage (the latter since they introduced 'patron submissions'. Grandpa's stuff should be good, though :) . Just make sure he hasn't used too many 'family legends' :D ... such as my grandmother's letter to a cousin 50 years ago, where an ancestor was with the army, and refused an offered land grant because he "just wanted to teach the children in the public school". Bollocks ... he was a former convict, a drunk, and was refused a land grant because he was a drunk.

I've just been in the UK National Archives tracing the on-board career of a Royal Marine via ships musters and captain's logs. :) Most of the stuff isn't digitised and requires personal inspection (or using a researcher).

Are you going to do one of those DNA tests? Ive been thinking about it, just to see what the mix is.

This has helped a lot of people make connections, but personally I don't want my DNA record owned by a large, unaccountable multi national company. Beware!

If his iron levels and ferritin are high with a high ferritin level on 2 occasions he qualifies for genetic testing for Haemochromatosis. That is much better than anyone's guesses. It is important as some serious outcomes that can be mostly prevented by venesections.

Thank you. Chiro, who also has a medical degree, sent him to GP for blood tests and hubby had another test about a month ago, so it's being monitored. Gp did talk about genetic testing and hubby due to go back in a couple of weeks.

If you have ancestors here since the 1800s you won't be happy until you find the convict.

I am always slightly disappointed that one of my ancestors came out as a "Pensioner Guard" ( British army regular - after 7 years as a guard they would get a land grant) - to guard the convicts being transported to Western Australia in the 1850's. It is now certainly seems to be fashionable to be descended from a convict.

It may be a two day deal? Who knows. A friend of mine has Accor Club (paid) membership. They get Aussie car hire for as little as $23 a day. Unbelievable price and good sized cars.
Hope you're right. The car deal should make up for travelling there and back on JQ.

I dont talk to my neighbours, except for inlaws next door, dont even know their names. I like it this way.

Dealing with this house we're selling and within a day, I know A LOT about them, their comings and goings, their jobs, private lives ect. Cant step outside without someone waving, coming over, asking questions, asking if they can keep the stuff Im throwing out, asking me to read a letter for them from Health dept ect.

Reminds me why I dont like "quite, neighbour friendly street".

Had a late night at work last night; finishing off end of month accounts.

Hailed an Uber and the driver wasn't the regular taxi/uber person but driver who had lived in Brisbane all his life.

Talk about the area I used to live and the tram lines that Brisbane used to have.

In 1969 all the tram lines got pulled up and replaced by diesel buses.

In 1949 car ownership went from 80,000 or so to almost 300,000 so a lot more traffic on the road.

....
In 1969 all the tram lines got pulled up and replaced by diesel buses....d.

We were in Camden the other day. Good, God. The commute to/from there was ridiculous!

Anyway, there use to be a train line from Camden that they removed. Same with Castle Hill. Use to have a train line that they took out and guess what they are currently building to Castle Hill - yep, train line.

Like that Frasier eposide when they thought they were related to Russian royalty, only to find out that a distant relative had sticky fingers and pinched the clock.

It's also International Firefighters Day.

International Firefighters' Day - May 4th

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.

So to all firefighters, thanks.

I've been using freebmd.org.uk and found quite a bit through newspaper archives. Yes, the UK National Archives is great for any military research. My grandpa's research is literally the family tree with names and that's it.

Basically sold to knockdown and develop.

I think we were over slightly overpriced as we were priced the same as a house that sold last week and it had more to offer. Ultimately, $10K less than asking price but we're OK with that as again, we were slightly overpriced.

Plus, we don't have to redo kitchen, bathroom and paint. Which we would have to do to keep it and rent or sell as home or investment.

We're selling my mother's retirement village unit. The village itself has a licence (the manager does anyway) and they sell 90% of the units. They have a list of prices for renovated and unrenovated units but basically all in the range of $420-500K. An old lady across from my mother's unit recently sold her unit with another real estate agent and got over $750K. Who do you think we should sell through? /s
