Some of the London and surrounding area tube/train/tram maps are just plain scary. Eg:

A fortune is spent each year trying to keep it all going.

Spend money on maintenance? There's a concept.

Unfortunately Melbourne has had a run to failure mentality (good thing they don't run an airline!), but there are some signs the new operator has a more preventative maintenance approach.

Which is good. Sydney has also been spending up big $$$ wise to improve their network too I believe.

Now that Qld are selling off the profitable parts of their rail network, you do have to wonder what will happen there - although the commercial arm and the passenger arms of the network have been separate for a while.

Perhaps the cost of Electrification exceeds the revenue for many. many years.

Diesel is way behind the times, but electrification does cost a huge amount of $.

Reminds me of one of my favourite QR stories.I had just driven mrsdrron to Brissie and coming home was listening to the ABC news.There had been a derailment at Roma street and the overhead lines had been brought down.The interview went something like this-
ABC-So no trains can get through.
QR-diesel trains can get through.
ABC-So there are some services operating.
QR-No
ABC-Why not
QR-We aint got no diesel trains!
I nearly drove off the Bruce Highway.
