I still carry a few things on day trips - which comes out of having done a day trip before and having a flight cancelled and being left with the clothes I was in only. Wallet was not much use as everything was closed. Ended up having to overnight in hotel (firm I was interviewing for paid) and being bused from Invercargill to Queenstown the next morning (airport still closed) and then sitting in Queenstown Airport for 1/2 a day - again with virtually no where to buy anything! For long haul trips now - I always have a change of clothes, my make up, hair straighteners, medication, chargers, iPad etc etc
Long haul I always have a change of underwear and my make-up. Figure if worst comes to worst the outer clothes will have to do. Most hotels I am at have toothbrush etc available if not, bad luck, just a lot of mouth rinsing. I have very short hair so no brush etc needed. iPad, phone and all that fit in my smallish handbag (a pacsafe cross body style for travel). The camera can get a bit heavy but if on holidays, I usually take a small day pack type bag as well.

I rarely travel without my laptop, at least, even for a daytrip (work can call at any time) and its carry-on, of course. I also envy those who can travel very light.

Of course some travelling light have their PA or similar two steps behind, carrying all their stuff ...

Know the feeling there! It's the same on holidays, laptop always goes with me as never know when something is going to come up. Wife is just used to now, and knows that for me to simply be in another country (even if working still) is as good as a 'holiday' and 'relaxing time' for me!

I have my work emails as one of the email accounts on my iPad and that is normally sufficient. The only downside is I cannot access our document management system (which holds documents and emails) from the iPad at the moment - fighting to get that functionality implemented at the moment!

I sometimes wish I was that IKEA type person - those that can live the minimal lifestyle - and can survive with hardly any clothes or possessions  that is definitely NOT me. I have decided the time has come to clean out my wardrobes ( walk in /and 2 spare rooms ) so next month while Ron is in Tassie - the major purge will occur - as long as I survive todays dental extraction
Hope the tooth went well mrs.dr.ron with no complications. After root canal I do have 2 teeth that the dentist says have no bone holding then so he suggests removal. At this rate I wont't have any left.

Ha .. good luck! Two weeks ago, spurred on by some friends, I resolved to have a "major clean-out". So I went through all the cupboards - ruthlessly!

I repeat, ruthlessly!

Yes, I manged half a trailer's worth of old crockery, glassware, a few cardboard boxes and a bunch of redundant files from the office.

Yes, of course I might need the box the juicer came in 20 years ago. How could anyone throw that out? you never know ...

Surely it isn't a black and white argument? You can be interested in the young royals without declaring yourself a monarchist? You can be a republican without aligning with the red bandana man?
yep - I am totally a Republican (but then I grew up in a country that became a republic in 1961), still find the royals interesting from all countries. Must lead a dull life.

almst true :) Master FM never applied to Google, he put up his details on LinkedIn and the next thing a Google recruiter contacted him.... They must have recruiters who look at all LinkedIn profiles or something, to find likely candidates. After that it was quite a lengthy process - a couple of phone/online things as an initial cull and then a full day in Sydney. The amusing thing was he thought he was interviewing for a position in Sydney, but when the offer came it was for San Francisco :)

Got a profile report card on my Smith Family sponsor kid.

Shes 10, she lives in NT and Im really worried about how far behind she is in writing and spelling.
we've been doing this for years now. It is sad when one drops out of the program, but nice when they get to finish school.

morning tea is not a man thing.

at our sports comp day it's always the ladies who bring the morning tea cakes and bikkies and the men who do the shovelling (with spade not shovelling into mouth). In 10 years it has never been otherwise. In particular the volunteer roster is gender agnostic

Separately is it possible the female employees perhaps are less assertive than the male employees. The blokes would most likely if asked get something dodgy or less appetising for morning tea or make some excuse like oh sorry I forgot or I did not have the time. It's a common view that it's no use asking men to provide morning tea or food. Something like this always ask the ladies. Even the ladies who organise a get together always lean in her lady friends for this and lean on the men to either just tag along or being the beer/heavy stuff

Unless its food that needs to be burnt always ask the ladies.
dear oh dear! How insulting to the men! When I started working in the public service as an IT contractor in a Database software/ support group in 1983. I was told morning tea on a Friday was cake time - everyone took a turn to supply the cakes. Of course being IT and a highly technical area, I think there were only 2 females out of the 12 or so in the group. However the guys all turned up with their homemade creations and they were terrific- in fact I still have some of the recipes from that time.

Husband wakes me at 5am to tell me the Foo Fighters are touring and its my job to get him tickets (again) and a concert playdate/babysitter (again).

Last time I sent him to the concert with a very pretty, young, blonde coworker (while I stayed nearby at the Pullman) and thankfully, people thought he was the dad as he was creep'd out that some thought she could be the girlfriend.

but for the uninitiated that just buy toasters it's money in their pocket - we won't try and educate them
"If you are not using your frequent flyer points for premium travel, you are losing out!"

What a load of hogwash....

A friend of mine worked for Google, they flew him to SFO for the interview.

Son's friend works for Facebook. Lots of fun travel for him too. Conferences are a hoot.
