The totally off-topic thread

I dread the day that we will hear of an AFF'er caught up in one of these awful situations. On a personal front my SIL was very distressed as the South Australian Nurse who was killed giving aid in the London attack a few months ago was known her as she was her daughters swimming coach and her son's partner to his school formal. Every time something like this happens she revisits it. So its like people are always reminded of awful events over and over again.

True. When that guy took over the Lindt Cafe happened, one of our staff was a mess as her sister works in that building and had to be evac'd. Thats as close as I ever want an association with something like this.

Sorry, WMW, where's the AFF interest in posting pictures and names reported of a woman and details on AFF of an event in the US. AND especially items reported on twitter or early reports of a massacre?

IMHO many of these posts should be deleted by MODs.

The details will be revealed in the fullness of time on reputable news outlets. What's the point in posting nebulous stuff on AFF?

The Mod team give some lattitude to posting on this thread as it is after all the "off topic thread", but there are some (against ToS, SMM debate, etc) where we draw the line and advise these boundaries.

This act of senseless violence appears to be the largest single killing of people by a gunman in US history, so there is likely to be of interest to our membership, regardless that it has nothing to do with the tenets of AFF (talking about travelling, airlines, hotels, credit cards, tips and traps).

This does make my desire to head to the USA next year lessen but I'll still go - don't have any desire to head to Las Vegas anyway, not my kind of town.

Nope. Im not going to Mt Druitt, and I worked there for years. Gave up my job the day I went to the bank and there was a guy sharpening his machete in front of the bank and everyone was running away.

Recent house sale in the'Druitt was advertised as "just a few streets away from the Police Station". Thats the house highlight.
my very first home was a tiny unit in Werrington, which was a few stations after Mt Druitt. They used to close the station office at Werrington at 6pm as it was mugged so often. I lived right next to the station, but used to go to St Mary’s and catch a taxi if I came home at night, as it was safer than the 5 minute walk :). However it worked as a stepping stone to better things.

I remember one - a member from my recollection who lost his son, D-i-L and grandchildren in one of the Victorian bushfires. Still remember the post and the photos - just not the name of the member (and not sure they are still posting). That's when it hit home to me about telling my family daily I love them all....

Edit: found him via remembering his name - Who do you miss posting...or wonder where they are now? and found the thread I mentioned above, which just had me tearing up again. :(

His profile says he was online 2 weeks ago.
I had the same reaction when I found the post again QFWP.

Sent parcel to niece in Albury/Wodonga by aussie post and it took 5 days, cost $30.

Sent parcel to niece in Albury/Wodonga by TNT and it took 18hours, cost $20 and they picked up parcel from my office.

I know what I will be using from now on.

Looks like we did the same searching earlier today. Yes I'd noticed he's back. I've now saved his thread as a favourite, so any time I feel that life has dealt me harshly, I just need to go back, read it and realise I have it pretty darn good. Others here could do worse than following in our footsteps...

That idiot who ran Australia Post. Increased cost. Reduced service. Made competitive couriers very cost effective. And somehow turned a profit.

Australia Post "Track and Trace" your parcel is a joke ! A company I buy stuff online uses them for delivery. It must be the most pathetic excuse for a delivery company ever !!!

Sometimes when bad things happen you just want to touch base with ‘Normality’ without actively contributing.

And then you have the sellers that only delivery to a office or house, will not deliver to a PO Box BUT.... if youre not home, guess where they take it. Yep, to a PO!

Only problem is I have a PO Box in say, for logistic example, Parramatta East (2klms away) and they take the parcel to Parramatta West (4klms away).

Does my head in every time. Im now having stuff sent to my mother in law, who lives next door.

Still the best thing Ive seen on gun control - well worth watching part 1 & 2 (10mins).

I've started using Parcel Lockers and Parcel Collect.

But some online sellers won't allow delivery to them either, which sort of defeats the purpose sometimes.

You're right, and they wont take everything either.

And to illustrate just how pathetic even this option is, last month I ordered something from an online seller one suburb over, to be delivered to a parcel locker at a Auspost hub, which is a couple blocks away from my office.

It took them 5 days.

I highly suspect that the parcel had to go through that post office so that it could be sent to the sorting centre on the other side of Melbourne before taking several days to come back. Ah the inefficiency of scale...

The driving distance between the vendor and the delivery address is 3.5km. I'm picking up my item from the seller this time.
