The totally off-topic thread

The whole medical cert thing can be ridiculous. If I have a day off as I've got a migraine then I'm not going to a doctor for a certificate!

And good luck getting same day appointments with doctors these days - unless you want to sit for at least an hour at a bilk billing place. Which is always recommended when you have something like gastro or food poisoning...

In the past I had a staff member who suffered from migraines following some brain surgery and always cut him some slack because he was performing OK. When I was away on leave he had a Monday off with a migraine and my ex boss (thank god he's ex) made him go to the doctor the next week to get a sick certificate. This is the same w@nker boss who wouldn't allow employees to claim the mini bar as expenses. The migraine guy didn't drink alcohol and normally had a bag of chips and a coke from the mini bar for dinner and I always got into trouble for approving his expenses (maybe $15). I on the other hand could go out to dinner and claim about $80 because I'd had a proper meal with wine!!

It's all a bit pointless isn't it. Go to the doctor after the fact and they will simply write the required certificate based on what you state - so it is not more conclusive proof!

An employer that trusts their employees is always going to retain them better!

I hear you on the minibar thing - we have something similar - which sometimes ignores the common sense approach! It means I order something from room service instead - which costs more but yet is allowed under policy!

Advice noted.

If you're a manager or team leader here's some advice. When you pay people roughly the same you should never find yourself in a position where one person is working half as much or less than the rest.

That's not acceptable and people like me have every right to focus on that and ask questions.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on that point! If you don't manage the person directly, then you're generally not privvy to all the detail of what they're being asked to do or are expected to do...... I'll leave it at that :)

Nothing wrong skipping a school's swimming carnival.I remember doing so in the 60s and heading to the Ashes test.Had a couple of chats with Freddie Truman when he was at fine leg or third man-depending on the batsman.

So my friend arrives at work after a few days in Japan, to be told "we need this in Bali. Now! Here's your ticket, they're boarding in 20mins".

Sadly, it's Jetstar but at least J. She said QF economy is better.

30mins after arriving, driver delivers her to hotel, organizing massage and has to buy clothing as all she had was what's she wearing (uniform) and a Tshirt.

Now relaxing before return.

Much loved family pet dies overnight and you need a day off, personal (sick & carers leave) or annual leave?

I'd say it depends who one works for. Some employers will insist on annual leave, some a day in lieu of all the extra hours you've done over x period, some will give a compassionate pass.

Not a fan of giving compassionate leave (because there will always be someone that will ruin it for everyone by taking advantage of it) but Im ok with personal (sick & carers) leave.

Coworkers dog died last night, even Im crying. She was an awesome dog.

I remember many, many years ago, on the train home from the city, a guy answered his phone and was told he was seen on the TV news attending some food expo (or similar) and he was in a panic as he told the boss he was sick that day.

The thing is, theres no rule that says you cant go out if you are sick, though that obviously wasnt the case in your post.

Sick leave. I took an afternoon off after our dog died because I wasn't functioning at work, though I dont think anyone actually needed me to put leave in, they allowed it on compassionate grounds.

You can disagree all you like but you're still wrong.

We are in the same team and he is in the office less than 5 hours/day. He is not the only one that gets away with it as others have told me the same thing about other colleagues.

Should I tell management or shut up? I won't stop focusing on it as long as this continues?

Going by your multiple posts in the past, about not progressing in income/career, you wont get it but worry about yourself and stop trying to police others.

Annual Leave for most; unless it was for part of a day then time in lieu would be ok.

Some staff use all their sick leave until there is none left.

How do you know how much they are or are not doing? Are you overseeing their output? Perhaps they are simply more efficient than you?

I am way more efficient than my colleagues in my area of speciality - same piece of work will take them 3 times as long. Because I am more efficient doesn't mean I am doing less work.
You know people don't like you when they are openly siding with the person I'm talking about it.

We should all be in the office for at least 7.5 hours. Lunch and breaks are not included in the 7.5 hours. Trust me when I say no one has an agreement to work 5 hours/day.

I know exactly what he is doing. He is bludging and getting away with it. Management should be concerned but they don't know. Should I tell my manager?

Trust me when I say .....

Some people work smarter and/or have an alternative arrangement with the employer. Just because you are not privy to the details, doesnt mean its not agreed to.

I have various staff contracts, some will blow your mind by the amount of additional time off or non office hours agreed to but thats between the employee, their manager and GM/final approval.

Just about surviving the first week back. Thanks to DIBP changing their name, I have to update 60 websites with the name change. At least, for once, the govt has redirected all their pages, so no broken links to redo.

Interesting character assassination. I won't repay you the favour.

You can disagree all you like but you're still wrong.
That is your opinion and in no way corresponds with the policies of many organisations.

Time spent at office desktop does not directly correspond with productivity (in my experience).

What would have been more correct would have been; "You can disagree all you like but in my opinion you're still wrong".

This holds true, even if your name is Zaphod Beeblebrox.

Understood. There are people that work from home. This is not one of those situations.

What worries me is that people are sticking up for someone they don't know. Oh that Aussie fighting spirit sticking up for the bludgers.

Leave the rest of the discussion alone as it's not going to bring about a solution to the actual problem, which by the way is not me.

so how much time have you spent on AFF today @JohnK while you're sitting at your desk and appear to be working
