Don't tell anyone but I just left the office at 7:50pm after starting at 9:55am.

How would you go working 12 days out of 14, starting work about 7am, finishing after 6, in the heat & flies. Evening plotting up results. No company recognition of 'extra' time worked, no overtime paid. I must admit accommodation was provided by the company - camp stretcher, sheet, mozzie net; cold bush shower slung over tree branch; long-drop dunny or just a spade.

My own philosophy has always been that I get paid to get a job done, not to put in hours.

My very first boss, 40 years ago had the same philosophy and we never abused it as we did the project but not in regular hours. He was a systems analyst.

I dont think its healthy to be a competition. Im guessing that a surgeon that stands on their feet for 3-4hrs could be more mentally exhausted than I would be, crunching numbers from my comfy chair for a entire day and then you have a tradie thats been working from dawn, in the heat or cold until 2-3pm. Totally different level of work and tiredness.

But, good employees that are treated well and/or enjoy their work usually are happy to give more, when needed. Yesterday I was in the office at 6am as marketing needed early access and didnt arrange it beforehand. Tues night late night text to me and Im doing what I can for my office team, even though marketing isnt my team, them doing their job helps the company succeed overall. Doubt my bosses even know about it.

Its all good, I often get recongnized for my efforts, as do others. Scored a best off award in December that included a $$$$ prize for a holiday (they pay the FBT) and extra annual leave

I would have loved to have worked FIFO and the salary associated with those jobs.

My philosophy has always been that I set high standards and am I proud of my achievements to date. I do in an hour what some people do in a day. If you put me in a team of 3 then I won't sit there waiting to be dragged down.

P.S. We've been given the go ahead for a little more responsibility and to take on a little more work. Guess which 2 will be left behind?

But there are also some/many who fly Y as well on here and I bet some of them feel a little out of it sometimes.

Not sure how that relates to the assertion that those who fly in J are snobs, but I'm sure you have a point in there somewhere?

I'll stick with what's relevant to me. And since science has no proof what so ever I'll stick with what makes sense to me.

P.S. Superstitions can be real.

Yep, look at all the good work superstitions have done for the planet, 2 examples: The Western Black Rhino (now extinct due to the superstition that powdered rhino horn is medicinal, thank you Chairman Mao, science has proved otherwise) and my current favourite , throwing coins into the engine of an aircraft for good luck (mmm any volunteers to test that superstition out?...... no ? I didn't think so.

In my case it was half a day 4 wheel drive in, half a day 4wd out and I got paid the same as town based Geos working more regular hours. But even when I was at a mining town, in the mine, we used to work nights and weekends as a matter of course.

Didn't say that those in J were snobs - I did say that there are also a lot of Y travellers on AFF. If you noted JohnK's original post he was tongue in cheek with a wink emoji so your reaction about being offensive was not really called for IMO. Bored now.

Didn't say that superstitions can be good. I said superstitions can be real. Big difference.

And even if we stopped believing in superstitions it wouldn't make them go away. I wish it was that easy.

I have zero interest in the USA at the moment, but I can tell you I am completely in love with South & East Africa. The people are warm, caring, funny and really inspiring.


Iceland is still on my bucket list. GPH talks about it quite often, so I should just ‘“make it happen” soon! Maybe the 40th wedding anniversary?
