The totally off-topic thread

Well at least the person that attempts to dig themselves out of a hole and it collapses died doing something for themselves and didn't just sit back complaining about how badly life has treated them, and what a rotten deal they have been given.

All whilst waiting for somebody else to come along and solve their problems.

Meanwhile, my partner and I, that is my wife and I are off to play a game of tennis up the road at the Fadden tennis courts.... :)

Got a game of golf booked for the two of us tomorrow where we will be partners of another couple and have a hit. Nah, don't do golf, waste of time imo, but ymmv, whoops, wrong thread, isn't there a golf thread somewhere?

;)

I quite like referring to my husband as my partner as well as the usuals. To me it sounds more equitable.

So Pushka, we may have a generic cricket thread, but I haven't checked, however is the star bowler for South Australia today against Victoria a relative?

Oh well done you. And John Buchanan (former Oz) coach asked MrP the same thing a day or so ago. But no. He took the same number of wickets as MrP in his first match too.

Dean Sayers and MrP opened the bowling together in many matches. The Sayers that the Oz selectors refuse to select is Dean Sayers son. It’s quite weird seeing those two names playing together again for SA.

I like wife and husband for those who want it (I do). All about choice isn’t it, rather than imposing on others. I have found partner very useful for the kids though. Girlfriend or boyfriend seems inappropriate when you have been together multiple years and are living together. I do like referring to Ms FM’s partner now as her husband.

Sorry, you misunderstand, I don't have a problem with either wife or partner, it's the reference to "The Wife" that I find impolite and be honest, offensive.

To me "The Wife" is very impersonal, almost object like.

It's unusual to hear planes but they are circling, checked the bom and looks like a storm cell heading our way (worst of it heading south). Wonder if theres delays.

oh yes it does sound very objectifying :). I suppose it all comes down to context and manner - could be contemptuous and dismissive, or not depending how it is said.

We all have expressions that put our backs up. I have seen a few trip reports on Africa talking about “boys” ( for grown men) and “non-whites” and for someone who grew up in apartheid era South Africa it makes my skin crawl, but the people don’t mean to be offensive.

I also don’t particulalry like The Bride especially when that day has long gone. The Boy is a tricky one.

Steve Austin on ABC local in BNE keeps referring to his partner/wife as My Bride. I hate that, personally.

Jolly well said.

Not us. I heard “his nibs” on the radio.
We have been married 44 years.
I think having a near death experience drew us closer together. I rarely fly alone now and we do tend to celebrate milestones.

A similar experience 6 months after we married at 22 years of age has had influence over everything we do/did. For 40 years this year in fact.

A Rumpole-esk expression , so for me is ok.
I like ”Her indoors" as a blast from the past.

And for the rhyming slang officianados, how about
" Cheese and kisses ". ?
Oh. Just. No.
Besides I loathe rhyming slang :D

My father used "his nibs"quite frequently but in it's original meaning.Poking fun at someone who thought they were important.
There are quite a few today who I feel deserve that said about them.
World Wide Words: His nibs
