i only give money via registered charities
I don't mind giving money occasionally. $1-$2 here and there won't break me. But these people that ask in the city are professionals scammers even if they are homeless.

One older gentleman was chasing me a month or so ago to give me a free coke. He followed me into 7Eleven and told me so. He had 2-3 cokes in a bag. He was buying cigarettes and I was topping up Gocard and wasn't comfortable him standing next to me while I was keying Amex pin.

His catch phrase is "Help for the Brisbane homeless" as if he's their representative.

An ex work colleague used to work for perhaps the largest/most well known charity selling child sponsorship. She was not complimentary at all of their operation and said it caused a huge headache if someone wanted to meet their ‘child’.
Yes, but not as bad as all the ‘orphanages’ in SE Asia.

Is something broken with the new post alerts?

I often get that with this thread - happened the other day so I was a week or so behind; a lot of chatter had gone on in the meantime so took a while to catch up.....

I’ve noticed too the service has declined in recent year(s)

They're just getting ready to be more British, having taken over Homebase so just trying to keep the culture in the stores the same globally ;)

Why would you want to meet your little tax deduction?

I have an aussie sponsor kid in NT, via Smith family.

The couple of letters I've gotten, she is in a couple of new programs to help with school and I know she/the family gets the gift cards I send her for Christmas and birthday

I'm ok with min contact.

Usually it’s a village that receives the money but a child persona would work better from a marketing perspective.

I sponsor a boy in Nepal. I will pay for his accomodation and schooling until he (hopefully) graduates. I am comfortable with the committment. I know the man (a local businessman in our area) who owns/runs the Foundation. He makes several trips a year monitoring the orphanage and dealing with constant issues; corruption being only one of the numerous problems.

I’m happy to have minimal contact, although I do enjoy receiving his report cards.

Bangladesh boy through one of the main outfits, hopefully, he gets some of it. Apart from donating a truckload every month with the ATO ... we also drop decent amounts whenever there is a natural disaster causing total misery.

And people would like to meet the child that they 'sponsor' as they receive a photo and yearly updates about the said child. In effect the money does not go to the child/family and according to my colleague the child sponsored may not even exist in the so called village. The money (minus of course the administrative costs) goes into a large pot to service general programs in the region.

A few years ago we looked at what we were doing with charities and decided that we would just pick one and focus on it. There is a particular one that is relevant to us, cancer research, and now we just funnel into it, and it alone. It makes us feel a bit more focused.
