Last night was interesting. Attending the People’s Forum. Curious it was held in a footy club with Pokies and Keno in the background. A diverse mix of people were invited and at a guess I’d say representative. After security check and payment ($50 cash) we were allowed into the filming room where snacks were provided. I’ll upload more photos in a sec from the phone.
Not a lot of space but I did get a shadow of course. ;). David Speers explained what would be happening and sorted out who would be asking questions. Yes, I had one planned. Then the 3 amigos appeared and managed a 3 handed shake.

Lights camera action. Spot the Pushka head :D. Hint: I’m kind of near a Hi-Viz.

Weatherill started the speaking followed by the others. He projected a vision for the future. Labor has been in for 16 years but he presented as though it was his first full term which is true. Not much audience reaction. Then the other two. The usuals. Then the questions. First one up was about cost of living. Spent some time on this but no resolution. Disputes as to who is responsible. An audible groan went up when Weatherill blamed the sale of ETSA, now 18 years ago? I don’t think this was heard on TV. Another couple of questions - housing trust, law and order, NDIS, and then........I asked one :).

We had to say our first name, and then what we did. My name, then said that “my husband I are Small business owners. Sadly my husband was on a plane right now :D on his weekly trip to Melbourne as that is where 80% of our work is now”. (Almost an AFF plug right there). Marshall was nodding. Then said, “But that isn’t my question” Marshall stops nodding. My question “starting with the Premier, what have you learned from the mistakes over the last 4 years”. So given all our child protection and aged care issues here Weatherill started with motherhood statements and then touched on actual issues. Speers wasn’t happy. He wanted to press him on why he didn’t sack Vlahos. Weatherill got rather heated during this period, and if there had been an ear piece in I reckon it will be saying for him to calm down. Marshall’s response was that he should have been more on the ball with Oakden. MrX - he was just very funny and self deprecating and his response got the only laugh of the night.

Overall, Weatherill seems tired, and tense and a bit less in control than he usually is. Marshall has improved a lot. But not charismatic. Nick X, very likeable. I understand the attraction. We do need people like him in Parliament. He never touted himself as a Premier. He got very angry with Marshall when he suggested that a vote for MrX was a vote for Labor.

My recording of Foxtel failed but there is quite a bit on the social media. My question was written up a bit. Of course, not exactly as I had asked it.

Sometimes we have days like that. The only biggie is really the visa so hope you can get that sorted. The others, par for the course.
Visa a huge stuff up. Has ruined my 2 week holiday next week. Just as well I haven't booked all the accommodation so now need to change plan. This on top of all the things they wanted for the spouse visa application by yesterday.

Loathe as I am to point out the obvious but consumers already pay for the packaging of a product in its shelf price.
Agreed. And ALDI doesn't pack so doesn't charge. Sorry @JohnK, but you are already paying.
But how much do each of these these biodegradable bags that are being phased out cost the store? No more than 2.9¢ each. (I suspect that price is inflated as I'm sure the 5+ Billion purchased by Coles and Woolies don't come at list price.)

The supermarkets would not have been providing them if they did not increase profit by more than 2.9¢ each time one is used.

So, be prepared to save money as you won't be able to buy those whim / impulse items. I already find this at ALDI - I take one or two bags but often need restrict purchases to what might fit.

Who paid who $50?

Me being thoughtful. Yes, it does happen sometimes.

Who paid who $50?

The Marketing and Promotions company as expenses reimbursements. It took me an hour each way to get there and they needed a cross section across all electorates.

How much does it cost the community to dispose of these bags? Landfill isn't cheap. What does it cost the environment which is damaged by having these bags as rubbish etc? As for the ocean with so much plastic it is killing fish (i.e. food), well how much longer will that be sustainable?

While it may seem a short term folly there is a long term goal to decease the use of plastic bags. That some consumers need an immediate price point to make them aware of alternatives is how we change wasteful behaviours.

Well done Pushka for button-holing a couple of pollies - having to admit to their faults, brilliant. Sorry I wasn't home to see you in real time.

Hmmm, I still like the photo of you I have on my phone.

Biodegradable plastic bags represent 21k tonnes of the 24,000k tonnes of landfill dumped in Australia every year. They decompose in 3-6 months; reducing landfill by 0.1% leaving the other 99.9% to its own fate.

The situation re landfill and such plastic bags is well and truly over dramatised.

When I was searching the house for all the Christmas decorations Ive collected while travelling, I reached inside one bag that was about 5yrs old and its entire wrapping had disintegrate. Quite cool to see that it works.

I had some Qantas PJ's in the old cellophane type wrapping; four years ago we moved house and the plastic had disintegrated into short 2 to 3 inch shards.

And the reusable "green bags" is that it has to be used over weekly for 2 years so that the energy and materials used are then on par with single use bags. Some say 1 year. Then it is not biodegradable but only degradable - so it breaks down to little pieces.

Check out microplastics in marine animals. These are more of a problem than biodegradable single use bags. Its the hard plastics, folks!!

Balloons, the plastic that holds a 6 pack of beer and those ring things around our milk bottles do a lot of damage to marine life.

DO. NOT. participate in a balloon release. Ever. God isnt going to pass on the message to your newly departed via a blow up balloon.

Those 'biodegarable' bags decompose into trillions of little bits of plastic leaching into our waterways and poisoning us, the fish (we eat), and all the other animals.

FAQ

Choice says: In Australia, the term biodegradable usually refers to plastics that are 'compostable', meaning they will break down when placed in a home compost bin or commercial composting facility. When disposed of correctly, a compostable plastic will almost completely biodegrade within six months – a big improvement on the 100-plus years it would take for something like a normal plastic bag to break down in a landfill."

This is why biodegradable plastics are not effective yet because they must be disposed of correctly or they may never break down as claimed. Furthermore, disposing of them correctly is harder than you'd think. In Australia, for example, "the majority of products currently available are labelled 'compostable', meaning they need to go to a commercial composting facility."

Rowan Williams, president of the Australasian Bioplastics Association, told Choice there are only around 150 of these facilities in Australia, but not many of them are in the major cities.
