If you had a fall and needed emergency surgery wouldn't that be done in the public system? I know you get don't get choice of doctor/hospital but at least you're still looked after.

Can be public or private. Private in public hospital can’t jump queue.
Some privates have emergency department like the Sydney Adventist

The mind boggles. So many good things in the world, why this?

Mind you, I love a very tarty lemon gelato. There use to be a wonderful small market brand at Coles but they took it off the market. It was awesome.

I hat anything tarty lemony. We have an ice cream maker. Favourite is burnt caramel macadamia

If my face isnt squishing up because its so tart, its not tarty enough. There was a lemon lolly in Japan that was equally awesome.

Gelatoingredients.com.au

We sometimes go and get bases and pastes for ice cream maker from here.

Often experiment ourselves - Mrs QS mostly. It seems to be a girl thing doing desserts and gelatos. See that in that hideous show called Masterchef. Invariably the girls tend to do desserts and the boys tend to do animal protein

I dont have the kitchen space for a icecream maker but one day I will.

Lady in the office made choc cherry once - it tasted like cherry ripe.

We did try a peanut butter gelato once - did not turn out quite as expected in terms of texture.

Anything nutty is good. Macadamia, cashew, almond.pistachio

Re Water in phone:

We got a vacuum sealer - a smaller version of what the butchers use

Few years ago iPhone got water in it.
Put it in vacuum sealer and managed to get it going again after a few cycles.

The vacuum quickly evaporates the water and sucks it out. Had to do it a few times to make sure it’s all gone

Just as an aside on travel insurance, I had a look at the t & c's for my amex card for the bosses trip to Vancouver and it said that supplementary card holders weren't covered if they traveled by themselves.
Does that sound correct or I have I possibly interpreted that incorrectly? Legalize isn't exactly my strong point

If that is a Plat Charge card, read the definition of "Primary Card Member" and "Supplementary Card Member" in the T&C of the insurance - the terms are "member" not "card holder" (which provides some clue as to how confusing and misleading this is).

Just to be bizarre and promote confusion, the insurance conditions define Primary to be the Primary Card member (which is what you would expect) and also their Spouse / Defacto and children under 24. Anyone with a supplementary card (and their spouse and children) is a "supplementary card member" who isn't covered. Note that whilst someone may be a Supplementary Card member (by holding a supplementary card), they can actually be deemed a Primary Card Member for the purposes of the insurance.

Really confusing, and a legacy of the fact that supplementary card members used to be covered, and now are not, but spouse / de-facto and children are still covered.

The death of the telephone > (or quick draw mcGrumpyguts does it again )

Our home phone receives 90% junk and the very occasional legit call.
Friends all use mobile and or text.
I have become super blunt and quick to hang up, and I think I just hung up on a legitimate caller..
I assume that they will find me some other way, but wonder if the legit callers understand the situation.

Many 'junk' calls are autodialled with software that monitors sound after the call is picked up. Only if an answer-like sound (e.g. "Hello") is detected will it connect at the calling end with one of their operators; if not so detected the automatics disconnect the call.

I have got into the habit of not saying anything to unknown numbers for some seconds; generally the Junk call is disconnected from the other end.

Rarely do I have to explain myself to a legit caller ("Sorry, I have been inundated with junk calls. I was not sure who you were ...").

Actually I forgot emergency surgery would be covered by private, so the example of the fall isn’t valid. Long wait times for what is deemed elective surgery is an issue though I know of people where it was quicker to go public than with the surgeon they wanted.
Yes, the gaps can be horrendous with PHI but I still woukd prefer some control over where I am treated and who by. :)
Understood but I believe that's something to consider in your late 60's or 70's.

My premium has gone from something like $92/month to $119/month the past 4 years and shortly I will need to include wife. That's a huge increase in premium.

Thanks Equus, I'll have another read, but to be honest and I know I may be wasting money, I buy another policy as well. Haven't had to make a claim as yet and hope I never have to.

Got the third degree entering Portugal, but something or someone is looking after me. I was in 7F and 7E was the only spare seat that I could see on the plane.

Or, if a mobile, let any non identified number go through to voice mail. Legits ( like government!) will leave a message. But can be a pain if I have to call back and get in a queue, but thankfully doesn't happen that often. I got rid of of my landline years ago.

I have another annual policy as well - but not for that reason, rather to do with some exclusions and other differences.

The other oddity to note, is that although a spouse is covered travelling alone as a "primary cardmember", and does not need to actually have a supplementary card, some of the other terms to actually access the benefits would require them to have a supplementary card. Travel delay expenses are only covered if charged to the card - which is hard to do if a card holder is not present.
