Off to the country soon, be glad to get out of Berlin, I'd like a dollar for every siren I've heard, wouldn't be rich but it'll pay for more than a few beers. :)

Hasn't been the same without the boss, who speaks German, but I've been able to spend hours wandering shops, some that she hates to do. I'm the 'shopper' in this family. :) Love the euro and pound shops, can't have too much cough and it's only 1 euro or pound, say no more.

Coming from a country where smoking is on the decline, I'm always surprised at the number of people of all ages here that smoke. A lot seem to have cigarette in one hand and mobile in the other as they walk along, seemingly oblivious to anything else.

Cigarettes are so cheap in the Continent. Everyone smokes in Croatia too.

Any visits to concentration camps? Only for the respect factor but I really want to visit Auschwitz or Dachau

we are really mean and don’t use doggy jackets. When they had them on they were so warm that they used to amble around sniffing and having a great time, while we shivered in the icy winds. So we stopped using them and now we have a lovely run with them :). We will start using them again when they get a bit geriatric.

I use a coat from a Canadian Brand called Chilly Dogs - Chilly Dogs as the dog is short coated and with minimal body fat, and feels the coat.

At night he has one of a similar style made by a friend - but with more coverage. So it has a big neck piece, covers his thighs and a nice broad piece on the chest. He loves it and won’t settle some nights until it gets put on. Without it there is a very large dog glued to your side for warmth.

I make them a hot water bottle every night and slip it under a couple of layers of blankets in their bed. They do sleep in the laundry, but it’s quite warm. They spend all winter sitting on my lap - in spite of the fact that the heater is running - maybe I should try their doggy coats inside :)

One of the joys of living in a body corporate run building is being the Secretary and dealing with cough. Yesterday evening the Asst Secretary advised me that there appeared to be a blockage in the common sewerage pipe.

Well I'm off overseas so you get to step up and deal with it (first time ever had to do anything). But, but.. well either you deal with it or I will later in the month, good luck coping with raw sewerage and no toilets/water for the entire building.

Got several texts upon arrival in Hong Kong, she's dealt with it.

Sometimes you just need to force the issue and let them know of the consequences if they don't.

We have building managers who take care of those sort of things though MrLtL as the chair often gets bleatings from residents. There is someone at the building during the week and a phone number for after hours. Makes it much easier when things go wrong.

Ms FM went to Auschwitz - she found it quite a moving experience.

We have been to two. Dachau which while sobering didn't have a lasting effect on me - I was only about 22 and probably too young and stupid to fully take it all in. The second was Buchenwald a few years ago when I was about 60. This really did affect me. In the intervening years the ability of these memorials to tell the story of what happened has been vastly improved and the German governments are to be applauded for ensuring that what happened is not swept under the counter.

I also believe that part of the reason that Buchenwald did affect me so much, on top of the brutality and barbarism recorded there, was its location on the outskirts of Weimar. This is a lovely town where had spent some time and was a centre of German culture in the 19th Century - think Goethe and Schiller. Yet this bestial place operated in full view of the city and the inmates were marched through the streets being spat upon by the locals.

It took me two or three days to get over the feeling of depression and anger that I felt after our visit. I will never visit another Concentration Camp.

Really, I am just cautioning anyone that visiting these places can have more of an effect that you expect.

We're too small for this to be financially viable. But I have previously threatened that I will abandon the post if some of the owners didn't support me in getting things done. With fewer than 10 units sometimes threats are the only way to get anything done.

Apart from very basic stuff by the Asst Sec nobody could actually do any of the required functions.
