The guy at the PC repair shop said it is more than likely the motherboard but I would also need a new power cable/AC adapter. Who knows what else has had it. He said it may cost $500-$600 to fix.If it's the motherboard that is gone, then probably worth changing - sometimes its not easy to just change the faulty part in a laptop.
I purchased a new Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 with half-decent specifications (4GB memory, 500GB hard disk, intel i3-370m processor, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit etc) for $799. I should have also received a 15% discount for eCoupon WEEKENDSALEEVENT but this was not working on the weekend when I placed order. I have informed Lenovo of bug and their web team is looking at the "potential bug" and will get back to me.
In reality I have paid ~$680 for a brand new laptop with 1 year warranty. If it last 2 years then it is a bonus. I just cannot justify spending $1500+ on a laptop I will want to replace in ~2 years anyway.
