And there in lies the problem. I don't believe I can change the option with Hotmail.
I am not a Hotmail user. But I do have a gmail account and have set up Outlook to be used as the client and have set options as I described above for my gmail account. Then if reading my email and managing my account via Outlook I don't have to worry about return receipts.

I do the same for my ISP email account. My Outlook mangaes six different email accounts (2 gmail and 4 from my ISP). These also come through to my Blackberry. Gmail uses IMAP with SSL and TLS. See here for instructions.

Here is the instructions for setting up Outlook for Hotmail.

At that rate we should eliminate all forms of greater networks, i.e. the Internet for a start.
Why? I control what is sent from my PC to the internet as I have the settings on relatively high security.

And I guess you also think that being able to send emails originating from non existent email addresses is a good feature as well? Let's do everything we can to assist people who's only interest in life is to harm/annoy others.

AFAIK, Hotmail does not support read receipts.
Are you sure? I had a funny suspicion it did but I am not certain.

Thanks for the advice. It would be really useful if I ever decide to use Outlook....

Direct answer to argument: You may control what you interact with on the internet, but my point is that the internet also assists those who want to cause harm/annoyance in new ways that didn't exist before the internet was invented. In fact, it is a very large area of malice/crime that is extremely difficult to control, enforce and prosecute. Let's not even think about that the original purpose of the internet has now been surpassed in several magnitudes by the now most-popular content being distributed on it - coughography. Once again - a case of a good thing (or rather, something invented with the intention of doing good) which has now been tarnished by those who use it for bad. So should we abandon the internet?

As for sending from non-existent email addresses, once again there are legitimate reasons why one would want to do it. Thankfully not too many lay people know how to do it (otherwise there wouldn't be a lot of point with email addresses).

Extended argument

The base fallacy behind all of this is features have been invented (bad phrasing, but the best I can think of at the moment) with the nominal intention being good, not malicious.

When one decides to become malicious with it, that does not necessarily mean the feature is at fault for causing that malice.

It's like saying that knives and sharp tools are no doubt useful to people, but people are getting stabbed everyday with...what do you know...knives. So should knives have never been invented (or at least be denounced as a ridiculous invention) because it can be used by those who seek to harm/annoy others?

Credit Card Marketing - Epic Fail

How many readers of this article will be interested in the products that are being advertised at the top and side :mrgreen::mrgreen:, credit card companies should really insist banners are not shown when the content of a page has any mention of a hacker!

When watching the Ladies Masters golf on the weekend Wayne Grady told me what my golf problem is-too many FUSS shots-cough*** Up Second Shots.

LOL - sounds like you had a good one :)

Sure did, only just fully recovered today. Probably getting old. But that 5th bottle of red (and shots) might have been too much. I couldn't help it the wine cellar was too tempting. ;)

(as is the 'recall' capability, for a sender to 'recall' an email sent in error; I've seen some doozies come thru to my inbox before that they attempted to 'recall' and of course, were not, as I do not use any microsoft products in my server network ;)).

Novell Groupwise seems to have a recall feature. hope you haven't read any of my doozies. Of course, for me it is the doozies that don't get recalled that get me - like asking the entire organisation if anyone has seen their coffee cup on level 6. Strangely, people get upset when I email back to say it isn't over here it this other building 10 km away.

And the malicious use is what concerns me.

Is it malicious to use it to find out if that sod I need to do work for me reads the email I send them. ;)

Correct. The only time they work is when an email is received via an Exchange Server. Postfix/sendmail ignore this. It's purely an MS implementation (as is the 'recall' capability, for a sender to 'recall' an email sent in error; I've seen some doozies come thru to my inbox before that they attempted to 'recall' and of course, were not, as I do not use any microsoft products in my server network ;)).

For a home user, other email programs like Thunderbird will prompt to return receipt etc - so it's not just a MS system.

Other corporate email programs (like Lotus Notes/Domino and I believe Groupwise) have their own implementations of Return Receipt, Message Recall etc etc etc.

Most of these won't attempt to send the RR or Recall outside of their network though!

No.

But it is malicious to constantly receive emails from dud email addresses that they found my resume on SEEK and I qualify for the position of payment processing manager. Sure most are caught by spam filter but the occasional one gets through.

Wow you get interesting spam. I mainly get viagara. But did recently get offered quality tungsten radiation shielding from china.

Did also get an offer to tighten something for me years ago. Made me wonder if the RSM was onto something afterall, with his characterisation of my masculinity.

I'm staying up late tonight in hope it will help me push out some night shifts from tomorrow. It's a few years since I've done shift work.

Anyone got advice on how they get through night shifts?

Good luck with that. I haven't done any nights for a few years now but when I did I lived on caffeine and used to pray for cool rainy days to sleep ;)

Thank you. I'm allowed to set my own hours on nights. Thinking some 12 hour shifts to push out the overtime. Mmm, I think I'll achieve overtime sometime tomorrow night . Then bring on working the rest of the week.

Years since I did shift work! I used to approach the start of the week like you, stay up very very late the night before. Never stopped me being a zombie by the end of the first night shift, but was ok from there...slept well during the day, ok for the remainder of the week.

Mind you it helps to be able to sleep during the day (apart from when on day shift ;)) - I worked with a few people who simply could not.

Thanks. I'm on beer 2 of 3 so am thinking I'll drink these then call it bed time.

I hope I manage to sleep during the day. Since I've moved to Brisbane I haven't been able to sleep much past 7am. I WANT DAYLIGHT SAVINGS!

I covered our Hong Kong office recently due to it being closed as a result of Chinese New Year and just powered on running on E for a few days... I lived to tell the tale, though ;) Boy did I sleep that weekend after! (I did my usual day time tasks as well as HKG stuff in the evening)

Avoid them like the plague is my only advice, hated them when I was an ATC, especially 3AM for some reason, might have been something to do with the thought we were about to get very busy at 4AM with the international arrivals mixing it with the redeyes just when we were at out most fatigued! I worked on Syd-Mel Radar and we always had a little freight plane that popped up every hour or so as it toured the country so we could not take a break, the damn think was like a mosquito when you are trying to sleep!

That may happen when they finally make the move into the 21st Century!

I am up at ~4:00-5:00am every day and then try to get some sleep for the next 2-3 hours as I keep waking up. God forsaken place....
