The totally off-topic thread

Well, Bratislava has to be the tightest security screening I've been through yet.

I did my usual, laptop out, left digital camera, phone, etc. in my bag (as I've done in 30+ airports around the world) and walked through. Didn't beep when going through so all good on that front. Anyway, the person screening asked me to put the bag through again, taking those items out, so I did.

All good and well .. goes through again, then the other lady behind the desk wanted to search through the bag. OK.... let her do that, unfolded all my neatly packed belongings etc. and found nothing.

What a pain! :evil::evil:

At least I made her blush :shock::lol:

Most people know my love for all things Apple. But now I have (yet another) legitimate reason to dislike them.

Why is it that the Apple iPad can't handle corporate type proxy servers in the proxy settings for a data connection?

The only setting is : Proxy name and port. No choice of a pac file, no usage of Wpad etc.

I know if you VPN in, you can set the proxy there, and I know that if you connect over wi-fi you have more flexibility - but that's not what I am after.

PAC files - is your IT still in the stone age?? Either that or you work for a mining company who has no clue about applying transparent proxy to VPN traffic.

And on not having support, BS. If you set your proxy to manual, and set the address to the path to the PAC file, it *should* work Ok.

This document from RMIT Melbourne (see Pg. 9) shows you how to do it.

Transparent proxy isn't always a good solution, and btw many setups are not as simple as you seem to think they should be.

The problem is that the info on Page 9 is not useable on the iPad when it has a data (ie GPRS/WCDMA etc) connection. Simply the two fields available are "Proxy" and "Port". Haven't tried specifying the wpad or pac file directly in that spot, but it's not a logical thing to do.

Here's an image of the section I'm talking about:

Anyway, thanks for the advice... will give it a go. (Didn't get a chance today ... perhaps tomorrow!)
