The totally off-topic thread

Have just worked 22.5 hours straight (should I have become a Dr?). Time for a quick nap/shower/caffeine hit then back into the office:!:

This job is killing me slowly.

I've done that. 107.5 hours of actual work (plus on call other than that) in 7 days.

Well I was avoiding this thread. But seems that there is final confirmation that everything I write is off topic. Guess that leaves me this thread alone.
Who is saying that everything you write is off-topic?

I for one enjoy your posts but perhaps I have missed something in the countless off-topic threads masquerading as real threads and spreading like a virus out of control in the main forum....

160 in 11 was my worst (no oncall at home included).

Did 170 hours in a fortnight as an intern. Worse though were the shifts starting 8am, finishing 5 pm the next day...what's that? 33 hours straight...scary that peoples' lives depended on your decision(s):evil:. Now, if I don't get 7.5 hours sleep, I can't function the next day! Age catching up!!

Someone is going to post now about starting work 8am Friday, and working through to Mon 5 pm...that's what my seniors use to tell me!! Edit: I knew it....see drron's post below!!

Gosh you young fellows are soft. When i was a boy and a JRMO in 1970 it was a strict 1 in 2 roster. And on your nights off you had to be back in the RMO's quarters by midnight to be on call for your unit.
Easter 1970 I was on for Orthopaedics.Began work 0800 on thursday and worked right through to Sunday~1000.Then slept the rest of the easter break.

For what it's worth, this is crazy. And sadly, registrars in Orthopaedics in the country still do this. What's worse is when hospital medical administrations then complain that the Orthopaedic Registrars are being paid for more that 24 hours a day - as if the registrars aren't working all that time.

Just looked at me manager's report for "utilisation" for Spetember. My report showed 309 hours billable hours work, but it still reported it as 94% utilisation. Now let me check ... yup, I was paid for 150 hours (4 x 37.5 hours). Billed 309 hours. Hmm, why is that not over 200% utilisation? Oh, that's right. I work in IT ...

Know the feeling :-) At least as a contractor, I get to bill out for every single hour I do.

Brisket sandwiches with Texas BBQ sauce at the gridiron is very tasty. Why don't they have great big chunks of prime rib for fresh carving at Aussie Rules?

Aussie rules equals Aussie meat pies! And they get tested here to see they don't exceed 30% fat content plus they are test checked for a low enough bacteria count to leave the makers factory. Yum!

.. and Aussie rules special prices! ;)

admittedly I was in the club level but seriously, they had a large piece of cow there, slicing away, and slow-cooked brisket in the most delicious sauce you can imagine. Fantastic. Of course the beer was incredibly bad.

For US sport we enjoy baseball at Petco Park in San Diego where you can stay at the adjoining Omni hotel and at the baseball you can get a really excellent and quick carvery sit down meal. The beer works well and I only recently realized that Bud Lite beer has a regular amount of alcohol in it!

Fun isn't it? Bud Lite has 4.2% which is almost as much as VB but the last good beer i tried was Leffe - 6.6%!

Come back and talk to me when you've done over 36 hours. I did it. Once. I swore I was about to die.

The joys of moving data centres and having everything fall in a heap during the process (Was meant to be 12-16 hours maximum, and the proverbial really did hit the fan).

I don't remember the last 16 or so hours. Apparently things were fixed:)

*edit*

OK, Doctors have it worse. Still, anyone that does over 20 hours straight deserves medals, regardless of profession (I'm sure Flashware can relate to many many times of doing over 20 hours straight; why did we choose this industry again??)

Because for some reason you weren't smart enough for the management who exploit you as such. :-|

Only once? Whimp. You obviously don't work in IT! My last 36 hours stint was last month. After starting my normal day around 8am and working through lunch and dinner (these dlivered to my desk by my most fantastic wife), around midnight my wife asked how much longer I would be working? I told her "at least another hour". She went to bed ... and got up at 7am and I was still on 2 conference calls and tapoping away at my computer. Kids went to school and came home and I was still doing the same things. Finally finished after the rest of the family fiinshed dinner and were on their way to bed. Its a good thing I didn't have to drive home afterwards! That was a 90 hours week - by no means my record.

I recall something about 'hey computers are fun to tinker with' and it was all downhill from there. I have had many arguments with my brother who doesn't understand the 'on call' part of IT work (over one Christmas he said 'Turn your phone off!' when I stated I couldn't as I was on call he said 'no you just turn it off, problem solved' and a heated argument ensued with him saying 'tell your boss to F off and go away'). Once upon a time IT paid well at least to deal with it.

I don't work in that part any more. I used to work for ISP's and wholesale bandwidth providers. They were the days of not knowing what time/day it was. 24 hours plus was common, 36 less so. I just recall the last one as it was a clusterf**k of a time:)

Now i'm in Telco land, where on-call is minimal (thankfully) alas the pay drops when call-outs drop. Planned works are done during office hours as our primary market is in the UK and USA, so their off peak is our office hours. I prefer sanity over insane overtime pay these days:)
