Now bear in mind QF551 BNE/SYD ops as QF825 DRW/BNE inbound so in the NT wet season or cyclone season (like now) the inbound flight can be delayed should there be a 5nm warning in place like like other say which caused a 90 minute delay to the BNE/SYD flight.

What flight are you on JohnK?

I was just asking myself the same thing! ;)

QF545 and apparently I help up departure as the screens were not even showing boarding well after I was paged!

In SYD now only an hour late! :p

And just to continue with my perfect luck in this life time my 12 month old laptop (just out of warranty that has had issues from the beginning) on Windows 7 has now stopped functioning because of what it believes are Windows Vista issues. Windows update downloaded some rubbish it believed was necessary a couple of nights ago and now no laptop function.

So no warranty. So no laptop. So now I need to spend money to get it functioning again?

I love technology and for the rest of my life I will ensure that everyone I know is informed and up to date.

P.S. I believe the keyboard now has issues that were not present before I smashed it a few minutes ago.

Welcome to my life....

Sounds like a software issue, wouldn't be covered under warranty anyway. System restore?

The keyboard issue .. well that's a user one ;)

What system restore? The morons that sold it to me online did not provide me with any install disks. Was it my responsibility to create restore disks? Sure it is my responsibility and the windows update also guaranteed that my computer would not freeze before I was able to get the updates on the machine.

What a lovely society we have created where we pay and we are also responsible for everything working according to specifications....

Switch off the computer. Switch on the computer.

All I get now is "Thinkpad.... To interrupt normal startup, press Enter".

Normal startup? What a joke....

Let me google that for you

Daniel I am not a dummy. It may sound that way on AFF but I am not extremely useless.

The laptop does not even start up now. Earlier on it would start up but I could not get to the point where I could ask for it to go back to an earlier restore point. By the way I have not created any restore points but I believe the system creates them if it feels you will need them as some time.

So now I have a Windows 7 laptop that believes it is a Windows Vista machine that was last functioning normally before a Windows Update.

I can see how this is all my fault and how I have to suffer mentally and financially to get my laptop back to where it was 2 days ago....

Wasn't insinuating that! It's something I use quite a lot with all the other guys at work ;)

I'm sure there's at least one person who frequents the AFF drinks who would be happy to help for a few beers ....... I would if I was closer :)

Unfortunately I am now in Sydney and nothing I can do to solve the problem with my laptop that I did not create.

But I am sure somewhere in there it is my fault for even considering to commute during peak times or even trying to maintain status on cheap airfares.

I will take second had laptop I bought last week back to shop tomorrow as keyboard does not work (anyone surprised?) and will take my Windows laptop to them as well to see if they have any advice. Hopefully it will not cost an arm and a leg otherwise I will need to purhchase another laptop very soon....

JohnK,

I get my computers checked and made sure all is good every few months.

My computers are generally all backed up very often.

My laptop's and desk computers are my income lifeline.

Have a look at buying a new laptop as the repair cost will quiet possibly more than the cost of a new laptop.

Went to update a laptop today and it was app $800.

my last service cost me app $100 per computer and no probs where detected.

I generally change laptops at end of warranty period.

I didn't follow this policy with the last laptop and it cost me a $100 hear and then another $100 and all up I spent $400 or $500 over a 6 month period, the dearest thing was a battery.

LOL! That's gold - I want to use that sometimes :p :D

JohnK it seems every system you touch gets cursed. I've run laptops on all sorts of OSes - Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows Vista and now Windows 7 and except for times when I know I really did screw up, I have never had a substantial problem with the system. (Of course, in the pre-WinNT-engine OS days, getting used to crashes usually due to stupid hardware drivers and faulty legacy software was a norm). Windows Update works OK here, too.

The most trouble I've ever had with my laptop is usually the odd virus or trojan that decides to slip through and wreck havoc a bit, where a bit of ingenuity and registry hacking is required. Also, I've outgrown my days in Windows 95 when downloading and installing free applications willy-nilly was the order of the day - I'm very selective now of what I install, because the last thing anyone wants is a registry with a lot of dead data in it, let alone a whole bunch of wasted "shared DLLs".

Most laptops (at least all of them that I know of) should have a "restore" procedure somewhere which returns your system back to how it was when you bought it brand new. Sometimes it's a button you need to press at boot which activates a hidden partition. Sometimes it's a set of discs which were either given to you or you should've created as soon as you got your new machine. The manual (or what little there is of it) that comes with the system should contain the relevant instructions.

Of course, this restore procedure simply wipes clean everything on your hard drive at the moment and plonks a fresh install in its place. You'll need to retailor the system to suit your needs again.

Have you considered a Mac? They are more expensive, but you can dual install Windows and MacOS on them, and I hear they are virtually impossible for anyone to stuff up. (And by the way - that last clause is not a challenge! :p)

And now you understand what some people have to go through!

Not that I am complaining mind you as I am sure there are worse things to worry about. Just as well I bought a used Win XPro laptop last week just so I can run CIV II. Did not think I was going to need it so soon, if ever, to access the internet! But even this one has a case of mistaken identity and it is behaving with CIV II like no other computer I have used in the past.

I am certain I am cursed and it does not stop with computers or flights. My perfect health is testament to that fact....

My current laptop is a Mac book Pro 15 inch screen.

I have windows running on it as well and very stable.

I do run windows because I get a certain file every day that can not be open with Mac and also do alot of web conferences via my laptop as well.

Total cost was app 3K with windows and a RAM upgrade as well.

Sit down, grab a whiskey, and chill out! ;)

That's around what I usually spend when purchasing a new machine. My current one (Lenovo X200) I got for around $2200 Inc. GST and has lasted me 2 years quite easily. Performance etc. is still fine, as is battery life. If I want more speed.. I can chuck in an SSD but I've not had the need yet :)

Note though, you can get similar spec machines for most brands in the US for pretty much half price. Damn them!

Anyone know when my 4:00pm flight will depart, had to check with the front counter staff.

Now onboard DJ337 to Brisbane after a quick trip to Melbourne for a Christmas party that I attended.

This aircraft has been refitted and 1F seems like a nice seat away from the sun.
