LiamR + others, I feel and share your concern - I have had a pathological fear of IV's (and having blood tests) since I was 13. I shudder just thinking about the reason and break out in a cold sweat. Waking up in the middle of an operation and tapping my anaesthiologist on his hand (because I couldnt scream from the pain with a tube down my throat). That is enough....
My worst experience subsequently was sitting next to my wife in my doctors surgery and being told by my doctor that I needed to have blood tests - I fainted there and then, woke up wondering why I was looking up at them and needless to say, a bit
I've had some strange looks from doctors and nurses - I was in the Wesley Hospital having a PET scan and when the nurses tried to inject me, my blood pressure went through the floor and because of the decaying nature of the ingredients in the injection, I told them the only way they were going to get it into me was via my foot. They had to run around to find a doctor who had ever done one there - none of the nurses had.
