Had an interesting experience with a taxi driver in Bangkok last week.

I was picked up outside Laem Chabang golf course (another long story) and was going to Convenient Grand hotel in Lat Krabang. It is located on Lat Krabang Soi 54 ~1km off main road. I was taken to Convenient Resort which is on Lat Krabang Soi 38 just off main road. We actually drove past Lat Krabang Soi 54 to get to Lat Krabang Soi 38 but I did not know the actual Soi as the address field on Expedia booking is not long enough and chopped off the 54.

If you know Thailand well and how the people "hear" spoken English then you will understand what I am talking about. The Taxi driver heard "Convenient ...." hotel in Lat Krabang and as he knew a "Convenient ...." hotel in Lat Krabang assumed this was the one. And yes I should have put 2 + 2 together when we arrived at the hotel but I was too tired and assumed it was the right one. Interesting that I did not have a booking but luckily the "right" hotel minibus picked me up a few minutes later and took me to the right hotel.

Received a call from the taxi driver the next morning as I was getting ready to board my flight back to Sydney. He couldn't understand that I had already used the hotel shuttle to get to the airport and was about to board the aircraft. Oh well.

By the way the hotel was very good for the price paid and is close to Suvarnabhumi airport. The hotel shuttle is a bonus and my girlfriend enjoyed the complimentary 15 minute massage. Didn't get to try the buffet breakfast as I was leaving on the 6:00am shuttle back to the airport.

Had a similar taxi slip-up in HK. After landing LHR-HKG I was on the airport train when they kindly let us know the airport buses from Kowloon station weren't running due to road closures (turns out it was in TST/ferry areas thanks to CNY fireworks, thanks to the hotel for not mentioning this at the time of booking, although there was a letter on the pillow AFTER I'd checked in!). After an hour in the taxi queue at the station, finally got into a cab, whereby the non-English speaking cabbie kindly took me to the YWCA. Unfortunately I had asked to be taken to the YMCA ('next to the Peninsula')... Luckily I'd been to the YMCA before, so realised it was the wrong place! Of course, since the roads were closed it was only the start of the problems....:-|

I landed in CDG, never being to France before. Only to find somebody threw themselves in front of a train and all trains to/from the airport weren't operating.

An hour waiting with a group of other english speakers for a bus that never showed up. Then another two hours waiting for a Taxi, and 60 Euros later, I finally got to my hotel, well past midnight.

Thank god they didn't give my room away.

When you guest your father into the Virgin lounge when he's never been in a lounge before, don't forget to tell him that everything is free of charge!

I pulled the wallet out first time as a guest at the AN CBR lounge mid-1990s...easy to do!

That’s why doors on platform are a good thing… used to be a frequent occurrence in TST on a Friday evening in HKG, not so much now the platforms have doors that only open when there’s a train in station.

I feel we may be a little too on topic :p

Well I guested him into the lounge before we left to make our parking ticket time.

Later he sent me an SMS telling me he was on board. I asked him whether he helped himself to a beer at the lounge. He said he didn't because he thought that it had to be paid for.

Do'h!

Did you explain you weren’t flying or just flash the card and hope they didn’t check up on it?

Kind of funny. I didn't even bring my Platinum card with me.

I fronted up to the lounge desk and explained I didn't have my card. One of the ladies asked, "Are you a Lounge member?" Of course, as a Platinum, I was, and she said, "That's all I need to know." I explained that I was guesting my dad inside. I said that I have other ID and know my VFF number. The other lady at the counter simply asked me for my membership number, I provided it and my name, and she confirmed I was a Platinum, so everything was cool.

The topic of my not travelling actually never made it into the conversation.

Ahh, VFF.

I thought you were using QFF.

I was briefly the bad passenger on the flight tonight. Gold digger got in a fair way before I realised that the sound was soft because the headphones weren't plugged in properly. What sound I could hear was pumping through the NC headphones   At least I think I stopped it before Kanye dropped the F bomb.

another classic example as to how government can really pick the time to invest.this week they started major upgrading of the DPO terminal. The old QP has gone replaced with a small room with a great view of the road. The council boasted that with this investment they will attract more airlines to DPO.
So this week Tasair goes bust.Somehow just cant see anyone else making up for whats lost.

But on a happier note our Dash8 left 10 minutes early, made up another 10 minutes in flight so arriving in MEL 20 minutes early.Unfortunately that meant no baggage handlers so by the time I got my premium hand carry I didn't have any wait going through security.
