It really sucks that LOTFAP make it so difficult for anyone to move here. Too many good reasons to move here for a few years (also, many reasons not to, but a few years of it I could more than easily cope with).

(and i'm discounting work visas because they're obtainable and expensive, but I mean live and work here easily and cheaply)

My thoughts exactly!!!

I have applied for a Green Card Visa every year for the past 8 years and never been successful in the lottery. It sucks balls.

I applied once. Couldnt be bothered applying any more after that.

My Godmother applied many years ago and got in, though needless to say it was far from an easy process from what I've heard.

She now lives in Las Vegas, enjoying her retirement.

Good to know some Uni Students have worked out the cost of a Death Star, and it will take some time to rebuild another one using steel from Earth

Argh. My 6 week old asus zenbook died on the weekend. Took it to the service center today. About a week... I suspect it will be 3 though.

Weren't you just trying to convince me of its virtues?

;)

Sorry, I'm not surprised this happened with an Asus.

Pardon my french, but they are the coughpiest laptop brand known to man. I had an Asus once (thankfully I didn't pay for it), and would never again. ABS molded plastic has no strength, poor build quality, terrible hinges, horrid support, drivers not maintained or prepared for new operating systems released within 6mths of unit launch, horrible control software, and my list goes on.

And even as a paperweight, I dare say it couldn't do that job well.

Don't sugar coat it - tell us what you really think!!

Not good.

On a good note though I am now using my Lenovo Windows Vista laptop again. It had died about 15 months and I replaced it with another Lenovo with Windows 7 and I have since bought a secondhand Lenovo with Windows XP.

After it had died I took it to a computer shop who said it is probably the motherboard and battery and would be too expensive. When my brother took it to another computer shop to get it fixed it was working again!

My last Asus was doing just fine until the video card fried up a bit. That was mainly due to dust on the MB more than anything - I really need to clean my laptops more thoroughly and more often. That machine lasted me a solid 3-4 years and still would've been doing just fine.

Strength was pretty good, though the scars were there, but it still survived. Build was fine - no warping or loose edges. Hinges quite robust. Support and drivers were either don't care or sufficient to task, but I know that's rarely a good thing (but I haven't seen a Windows laptop built by any company that is doing good in this department, including *shudder* Dell).

As they say, they don't make things like they used to. Seems Asus is starting to see the bottom of the toilet.

Problem is that if you stick to a PC it's getting harder out there to pick out a decent manufacturer. Even the Dell XPS series are getting a bit dubious, as are Fujitsu LifeBooks. Sony are alright but damn you pay a lot for those four letters (must be an extra surcharge on the S). Everything is either a much or muchness or a rare gem... the latter is getting much more difficult. I've been trying to pick laptop brands mainly on the robustness of the laptop and much more on which brands don't load a heap of c*ap on them when you take it out of the box. (Dare I say give me a bare system and I'll load everything on myself from OS right up; you make me pick away at half of your back office spyware and bloatware and I'll just as similarly vaporise it away before starting again anyway).

On a hunch, I'd say Lenovo are solely leading the charge.
