And I was very careful to avoid standing on it too ;)

Turns out I didn’t need to be!

Haha, Was already broken by then. Just hadn't had the chance to try a different power point to charge apart from the one in the hotel.
Another AFF'er did attempt to destroy the laptop in another way (not going to advise who or what happened), although seriously doubt that was the cause of the issue. Even if it was, 90 day Amex coverage should still cover any non-warranty claim issues.

When people say laptop manufacturers, they really mean designers!

It's amazing how "evil" Foxconn are, yet 80% of the time nobody realises that they manufacture a whole heap more than just those Apple products...

Oh we know, but just because Apple isn't the only one to dabble in the CSR-poor Foxconn doesn't make Apple holy. (Well, at least not to some people, they are always respected as holy if you're one in the 'cult'... :p)

Laptop "designers".... yeah too true. But what company truly makes their own laptops these days.

All I ask is for hardware that works, basic drivers to make them function, a decent hard drive, a decent screen and that's about it. I'll BYO OS if I have to. I don't need fandangled drivers that tells me how to turn on my wifi - I can do that with Windows; I ain't stupid. I don't need a card drive interface that looks like a stereo system; that's what Explorer is for. I'm telling you to make everything as simple as possible and you want to make it more complicated (which results in having to do more testing, more robustness protection and writing more stupid Engrish manuals).

I wonder how those *nix based laptop systems are faring in Europe? (I think Dell and Medion are the only ones I know that were mainstreaming such laptops)

I miss the days of the "white box"....

Argh. My 6 week old asus zenbook died on the weekend. Took it to the service center today. About a week... I suspect it will be 3 though.

Oh, so when you went to use it to charge up your phone, it wasen't flat. Just broken?

Yeah non-operational. Thought it was just flat at the time, but after trying to charge it all night etc - no go. Also caused me to sleep in on Saturday (that along with certain drink consumption :D and a hotel alarm clock that didn't work) as well as miss a call and feel generally disconnected from the world... (Yes, I need to buy a USB wall charger at some stage!)

I would have laughed so hard if you went back up to your hotel room to grab the charger.

Two trips to your room and still couldn't charge your phone. :)

OT here. Am not very technical....
UQconnect is folding up its tent from 31/3, so am needing a new Internet provider for home (?wireless, broadband) & maybe could also combine with home phone & mobile. Don't know if I can combine work phone as well.

Anyone know of good providers with good deals?

UQconnect is suggesting Internode as their replacement.

You know you can buy those USB wall chargers from Dick Smith, at least I was able to help you get some life back into your phone.

Just letting y'all know I am still here (finally back in London). Been a pretty hectic time since I've arrived back, but hoping to be back on top of things in a day or two :)

Can't believe how many e-mails I have from AFF of thread updates to read through.. I think that can wait!

LOL, I agree, I think its funny how people associate brand with manufacturer, when the largest maker of notebooks is a brand most would not have heard of!

Laptops are no different to any other electrical product, they are built to a cost. The Brand Image however will give you a good indication of weather that is a very low cost (ACER) or a more expensive cost (HP)

Now for today's totally useless fact-
Today's date is a palindrome. 21 02 2012.
Aren't you glad you know that :!::mrgreen:.
Cheers

My god, UQconnect are still around?? I used them once, a very long time ago now..

Their recommendation of Internode is a good one. iiNet is another one to look at, but they'll be the same provider soon enough (iiNet just bought Internode). Typically wouldn't recommend other providers, but I know people that do well out of Bigpond / OptusNet (mostly for bundle discounts), and I hear the occasional good thing about TPG (I wouldn't touch them, but they are quite cheap).

I have an excellent Telstra bundle, that is no longer marketed. If they didn't give me free call between all the number on the same bill I would have stayed with internode.

I really wonder how long they could've kept up that part of things.

UQ recently instituted that all our passwords need to be stronger. Hence everyone has been forced to change passwords, and the password change portal will reject your password if it doesn't meet the appropriate strength test.

Another improvement on campus: all the parking machines (or at least the ones in the areas I parked today) now accept credit cards (Visa or MC only, obviously). Whilst it's a bit longer to get your $3.00 debited from the card compared to just paying in cash, at least I don't have to worry about lugging shrapnel around with me anymore.

Anything else, Dr Sheldon Cooper? :p

(this post goes out to munitalP)

Yes,did you know that more than 10 people each year are killed by vending machines.
There are 307 days till Christmas.
The most famous person with a birthday today is probably Robert Mugabe-but he shares his birthday with Kelsey Grammer and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

How about those on monthly pay having to work an extra day this month/year and not get paid for it!
