Family seeking compo over Coke death woman

The family of a woman who drank up to eight litres of Coca-Cola a day says the soft drink should carry warning signs.
A New Zealand man claims his partner died because she drank too much Coca-Cola.
Natasha Marie Harris, 30, died suddenly more than two years ago.
At a coroner's inquest into her death on Thursday, her partner, Christopher Hodgkinson, said Ms Harris was unwell before her death but he never thought the soft drink could be to blame, the Southland Times reported.
I have actually heard that drinking even 8 litres of water a day could kill you in some circumstances so I'm not surprised that drinking 8 litres of a soft drink high in sugar (and caffeine)would do it as well.

Cheers

Thanks for the Syd dinner options.

Going with Cafe Opera. Hope the buffet is amazing for $90 a head. Ahhh, how I miss Singaporean buffet prices.

Anyone know of any discounts available for this place? Planning on shouting my mate and his partner as I haven't seen them in a while.

PM me and I will pop a Priority Privilege member for a visit cert in the mail that gives you dining discounts - 33% off in the case of three dining!

Priority Priviledge card gets you the deal for the year. It works for me at Intercontinental in Sydney and Perth and saving $90 at Cafe Opera each time is really great.
Others use the card for discount accommodation as well as food. We probably save about $1500 on meals a year as we don't need the hotel rooms.
If you do 2 Cafe Opera meals and pay $90 that should put a smile on your face.
markis10 uses this card way more than us so getting a voucher should get your mouth watering!

Great, thanks for the generous offer markis10.

Just had a look at signing up, but no way I would spend enough at IC restaurants to cover the cost. The hotel nights would pay for themselves, but I rarely travel domestically and often use Hilton's if I do.

Somethibg to bear in mind or the future I think.

If you have to give any details as part of the voucher, give them a fake phone number, their telemarketers do a great job of giving the program a bad name.

Now this one I don't have sympathy for, unlike the previous example you gave.

I don't even have sympathy for the woman who died. She dug her own grave.

I have actually heard that drinking even 8 litres of water a day could kill you in some circumstances so I'm not surprised that drinking 8 litres of a soft drink high in sugar (and caffeine)would do it as well.

In some cases, excess water consumption can result in the absorption of too many salts in your system. Do that long enough and you'll essentially poison yourself through lack of salts. (At least this is how I remember it).

This is rare, though, because:
  • Most water is mineralised, or has some minerals in it, so it's unlikely to deprive you of minerals / salts fast enough.
  • Most people eat enough (including salt) to keep their concentrations high enough, though at 8 L a day you might need to eat quite a bit.

In another sense, excess water consumption can cause death if taken quickly at once. I believe this phenomenon is called, "drowning".

Along the same theme of doing things in moderation, I had a relative make themselves ill by drinking too much orange juice.

They now can't drink any sort of fruit juices of any sort.

Similarly I had a work colleague who couldn't drink any alcohol. They drank way too much alcohol when they were younger, the problem wasn't so much the liver just that the rest of the body couldn't handle the alcohol.

High water intake can cause a hyponatraemia, or low sodium in the blood, as when the kidneys try to excrete the water you lose some sodium. The kidneys make the urine as dilute as possible, but there is still a but of sodium in the urine and so eventually your body cannot compensate.

Hyponatreamia causes confusion and eventually coma (among other things), and this is why eventually kills if not corrected.

From memory, large amounts of water in short periods also can kill, but through a different mechanism. Google the nintendo wii competition that went wrong. EDIT: appears it may all be due to hyponatraemia. Also, according to wiki the Ld 50 is 90g/kg
