One step closer to returning to the UK. Handed in notice today at work, will be unemployed as of the end of this month. Haven't booked flights but that will happen soon once I negotiate my actual end date.

Having a second crack at it?

Yep. My career is stagnant at the moment, there is nothing happening job wise in IT in Queensland at the moment (and actually, I have no confidence based on conversations with various industry contacts). Given a choice of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or the UK - I've decided to give it another try.

On VA or QF? much cost differential?
I was not planning on going to SYD this weekend and normal airfares were by now expensive but when I saw the flexible airfares on VA from OOL I had to book and use my complimentary upgrades in the process.

I have so far 9 returns booked from OOL next year which cost just over $800 in total.

Had a big lol though, in my resignation letter, I actually copied phrases from various emails sent by upper management over the last few months and pasted them together, adjusting them slightly to fit the situation. All of those "feel good" phrases that they send out came in very handy. A little bit of a "It's not you, it's me" break-up ;) Had a few colleagues proof read my letter and they laughed at how well it worked out. Slightly out of character for my usual writing, but contained all of the right buzz words.

Wonder if they'll realise I copied their phrases :D
PS, I'll be planning some quiet drinks one night in late Sept / early Oct. Stay tuned.

Good luck Mal...if you are passing by Sydney, let me know so we can catch up for a drink / meal before you head back to the UK.

I hear the term offshoring at work often these days.

Generally at Management pep talk discussions - like it's a good thing .. :-|

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Yep, I remember when IT was a job that required skills. Seems these days, those skills are easier to get overseas.

I hope it all works out for you.

I will be away for a couple of weeks but it would be good to catch up before you go.

Stay tuned for a quiet drinks night once arrived and settled ;)

Just watched the British PM David Cameron's statement on the Hillsborough tragedy, absolutely heart-wrenching. Could hear a pin drop in The House Of Commons during his talk, could certainly teach our rowdy pollies a thing or two.

How about bringing them from offshore to our shores?

I know someone who has worked in Australia for a long time and cannot find a job yet my company keeps bringing them in. I know why but that theory does not work.

Empire building with cheap labour looks better on paper. Now they are trying to get "all of us" to work smarter when in fact it is only some that are not putting in....

Good time to get outta queensland. 14000 public servants looking for work. It's going to be pretty bad up there with the associated cut back in personal spending. Had one colleague up there tell me the rumour was an 85% cut in their division. Hope they haven't been hit, not sure how people would feel about cut backs to certain services.

"Don't blame us; due to the fiscal incompetence of the previous Labour government, those people shouldn't have been in those positions in the first place!"

Whimsically, it is not an entirely fallacious argument, but still quite dubious, especially since many capital projects were frozen. It definitely cuts deep (pun intended), but suffice to say no one is ever popular when job losses are involved.

lol
Still, you may know what area I work in. I'm sure people want to turn up to hospitals and not get over exposed or anything like that. That doesn't just happen by chance or magic. Highly experienced and skilled people are needed. I can tell one story about those dodgy, waste of time, public servants  who discovered a fundamental flaw in some equipment that the manufacturer missed, the operators missed and they only found because the government was paying them to sitting around doing all sorts of pointless tests at the expense of the over taxed public. When you're exposing highly sensitive tissue (in people all of the same sex) it is important to use the minimum required.

I'm beginning to warm to QF again...actually I have always had a soft spot for QF international. Lovely crew on QF130 yesterday.....although it was a little like being on the set of Cocoon.
