The totally off-topic thread

No, it lost focus by not appearing in my list of New posts for quite some time.
I have a few hours to spare in SIN this afternoon. Will be interesting to see how many posts I actually read....

C'mon - I thought the best chance this thread had to catch up with the Amex thread was now, considering how quiet it has gone (as so it seems some of our newer members)...

Time to kick this thread back into life

Should get through quite a few. With the aud where it is you probably can't afford to do much else :)

OK how about a game? I call it...

A, B, C, D... R, T, W???

You must post a city whose IATA three letter code starts with the letter of the alphabet which follows that of the initial of the IATA three letter code previously posted.

e.g. AVV (Melbourne-Avalon), BNE (Brisbane), CHC (Christchurch) etc.

Rules:

  • The next city must be able to be flown from the previously posted city by a single flight number, i.e. direct routing. (This necessarily means no one can post a city which only connects to at most one other city directly.) This means something like SYD-LHR is acceptable, since it is booked direct (one flight number) even though it goes via SIN (although in this case, of course, since S and L don't follow each other in the alphabet, this choice breaks the rules!)
  • The airline to fly to the next city is irrelevant, except private planes, surface sectors (e.g. by b*s or train), helicopters or special charters that would not normally be open for sale to the public.
  • Once we get to Z, we start again with A (i.e. the next city to fly to after one with IATA code Z?? will be A??).
  • One city per post please.
  • No consecutive posts are to be posted by the same user.
Each post should be of the form:

??? (city_name) airline_to_fly

where

  • ??? is the IATA code of the next city to fly to
  • city_name is the full name of the city and airport name (if applicable)
  • airline_to_fly is the code/name of the airline used to fly to the current city from the last one
e.g. HEL (Helsinki-Vantaa) AY

For example, say the last posted city was:

DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth)

So we now need to find a city with IATA code starting with E that we can fly to from DFW. An example reply would be:

EWR (Newark) AA

Don't know how this will turn out........

I'll start with an easy (hopefully!) start point:

ADL (Adelaide)

I managed to get through the remainder of the Amex thread in SIN yesterday afternoon.

What I found surprising was the money exchanges were offering ~$S0.97 to the A$ when I arrived at ~3:00pm and by the time I left, ~7:00pm, they were offering ~S$1.01 to the A$. Just shows you how much currency can fluctuate in a short time. Or how much business they want to generate.

I cannot believe what I am seeing on XE.com today

1 A$ = CAD 0.7799
1 A$ = CNY 4.53 (this was over 6.5 CNY a few months ago)
1 A$ = EUR 0.4898 (over 2:1 now)
1 A$ = HKD 5.15 (well over 7 HKD recently)
1 A$ = MYR 2.33 (well over 3 MYR recently)
1 A$ = NZD 1.1098
1 A$ = SGD 0.9822 (well over 1.30 SGD recently)
1 A$ = CHF 0.7427 (close to parity recently)
1 A$ = THB 22.84 (what a joke, less than exchange rate in 2003)
1 A$ = GBP 0.3888 (almost 2:1 recently)
1 A$ = USD 0.6636 (another joke as this is the country at the centre of the whole crisis)

1 A$ = AUD 1.00000

At least we are still getting 1:1 on our own dollar....

I looked at that one but it can't be done on a single flight number and I couldn't find any thing else that worked.

course it can, the plane just needs to have been going somewhere else and felt the need to stop in Emerald !

Sort of close; as posted there were QF flight numbers on the afore mentioned codeshared bus route.

Tickets could be booked for about $20 and points (1000)/SC's (20) would be credited based on the booking - there were no checks as to if the person had actually travelled.

One guy found this to be a really cheap way of attaining WP!

Ah, now I understand. I love these sorts of things - it's the intellectual challenge of finding the loophole and using it.

I would have to applaud the person that did use it to full effect!
