Well that makes me feel better. I had the last meeting with the GM and the HR Director about my redundancy package. Despite not having any bargaining power at all, I told them that the package was light on, mainly due to all the flying I've done and the 12+ hour days (neglecting to mention that I flew forward most of the time coming home ;)). Anyway I asked for an extra 25K tax free. The HR Director started spluttering and said that he could not endorse this, to which I replied "that's why I'm not asking you". Anyway, within 5 minutes the GM rang back to say it was approved. She caved in so quickly I should have asked for more.

The benefits of knowing where the bodies are buried........

Well done, though I assume that even though you... ahem, "know a lot"... you didn't exactly burn bridges. Then again, that might have been the desired effect (after all, you're about to be employed again, or retire - who needs a reference?)

How are you supposed to get the $25k "tax free"? Are you just getting a big fat cheque?

It's included in the redundancy component, which is untaxed. I don't know how they did it as it is above the entitlement in our EBA, but the HR Director tells me it's all kosher. The other components (long service leave, notice period and so on) are taxed at 16%.

if you're going to get the bullet, redundancy's the go. ;)

Its still a bitter-sweet thing. 15 years is a quarter of my life, a pretty big investment at one place. Oh well, worse things happen.

Blinky you now have half of Australia wanting to take a redundancy! I started in March 1979 so after almost 34 years I am feeling like a dinosaur. I would miss the frequent flyer points the most rather than the cash.
Good luck with the next phase of your life...and may you live in interesting times......

As noted elsewhere I am now leaving CBR thanks to the redundancy fairy, second time in my 30+ year working life she has visited me with great gifts.

Whilst scarey at first it is a great time to decide what you really want to do for the next part of your working life, change a lot of stuff and get on with life. It truly is an example of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

You do of course need to plan and be ruthless with various parts of your life. However, it does focus you on determining what really is important. In my view it is yourself first then family, friends and so on in greater circles surrounding you. Your work life is in there but it is not the most important thing.

You can always get another job, it may not pay as much, it may not be exactly what you want etc But it is always easier to move on than for your family to grieve your loss or for you to find new family and friends because you didn't focus on the most important things first.

Why yourself first? Well if you don't look after yourself then you cannot look after then next most important people in your life and so on.

Blinky, good luck with the next phase of your life. Take a breath, smell the flowers and enjoy. You now have the upper hand in your life.

I might have told this story but about 4 years ago I got made redundant and and on that day I decided that I would always be in control of my destiny and not a bean counter.

I bought my own business and have never looked back and as long as I am making money and meeting our KPI's we will be fine.

Thanks, and good post Hvr.

I also took a Victorian Public Service redundancy over 20 years ago, and will never forget queuing up for the teller (when you did things like that) to pay off the mortgage. "Did you win Tatts?" Asked the teller. "May as well have" was my response. And I kept on getting better jobs after that. I'll probably have to drop dough now, but it won't matter so much.

I will miss the company paid flying, but can probably self-finance enough to keep reasonable status.

Finally watching the wallabies vs les blues. cough! It's enough to turn me to the demon drink.

Edit: so the wallabies played well for about 3 minutes plus had a couple of dodgy decisions against them. England tonight. :!: :(

I am at a dinner party tonight and was introduced to a very lovely young lady by the name of Kerri Hunt!!

She isn't even married!!

I have to say..... There is NO way I am going near her, after I've had a few wines.

What were her parents thinking?!

Haha ... Ask her what her nickname at school was!

Was her father named Mike? ;)

Dumb Ways To Die

I no longer want to live in this state.

From the people who wrote, "Go the **** to sleep"? :o

I'm surprised that Metro has had to do this, somehow taking responsibility for preventing the errant seeds in the gene pool from removing themselves. (Suffice to say, however, the ones who survived - and even those who died - did injure or kill others who were innocent in the affair).
