The totally off-topic thread

I'm packed & ready to go except for toiletries & electronics.

I'm working Fri/Sat. I'll find out tomorrow if I'm working Sun/Mon. With only 3 days of possible rostered shifts before my leave starts on NYD (and I know I'm working NYE) for the fortnight, I daresay I'll be working.

Need some assistance again.

Samsung Galaxy S3 with Virgin Mobile and roaming overseas. I am not going to use the phone but will have it switched on. I will be looking to see if I can port my Thai number to a micro sim to use in phone.

I have disabled data connection to device as I do not want to get stung. Can I still use wi-fi where available?

Thanks in advance for any information.

I don't have one, but I can't see any reason why you would have any issues using wifi

I've never used an S3 but on my iPhone, there's options to turn off all celluar (airplane mode) and also to turn off celluar data (in case you only want to use the phone as a phone). In either scenario, you can still use wifi where available. I can't imagine an S3 being much different.

I have used both the S2 and S4, and they have been the same. Yes, Wifi works without a drama, whether you have specifically disabled Data, or you have disabled Data Network Mode.

BTW, if you are concerned, give Virgin a call. They should be able to block overseas data completely. (My current telco does, and IIRC, Optus did)

If you don't need to make any calls at all, then I have found turning on flight mode and leaving it on, then enabling Wifi (using the Notifications Dashboard) works just fine (just turn off the Wifi when you re-board aircraft).

But the other advice on this thread is worth heeding too.

Must have been little fun at GLT today getting all the people on flights that were:

A: Due to go to heron today to start their holidays
B: Were evacuated off the island today after the generator fire.

In other news, the irony of Australia's biggest stocktake sale not being online during Australia's biggest shopping day won't be lost on the Myer board! I am betting the CIO will be at work tomorrow, possibly for a short while.

Too late to give Virgin a call as I am in transit and wont be able to once I reach Thailand.

I just hope I can get a micro sim for my Thai number otherwise I will get a micro sim with a new number. I dont want to come home next week and find there is a $400 charge for data.

With my S2 overseas I just hold the on-off button for the master menu and select "Data Network Mode" - one press to Deactivate (Repeat to reactivate). It works fine and Virgin have not charged me for data doing this.

JohnK, just make sure if you have a notifications menu on your phone that they have all been turned off. And shut down data services. Then you can leave the phone on for anything important and tell people to text and not call you.

You can safely connect to any free wifi if you've done the above.

Why bother turning notifications off? Just turn off mobile data. Then, when you jump on wifi all your notifications come through.

Using wi-fi in golf bar.

Funny thing happened last night. Arrived at hotel to be told computer has made a mistake and hotel is full. Booking has been confirmed via Zuji for over 2 months. Walked me to a sister hotel and gave me a similar room.

Not what I had in mind for the start of a holiday.

Glad you have a great sense of humour! However, as you would know, getting annoyed in Land of Smiles doesn't help. Good they had a sister hotel with vacancies.

I installed an app (widget actually) called Data On-Off. Free and works perfectly on Android. A simple push instead of having to navigate menus.

Great. One coughk up after another with my long service leave from 1/1. It's not shown on the roster starting Sunday.

My regular shift manager is on holidays (lucky him!) so I'm palmed it onto a guy who is acting but should have been the first guy picked.
