The Velocity Status Run Master thread

Would be keen to hear some status run suggestions on obtaining 730 status credits by Dec 17 to retain Platinum. I haven't had much opportunity for travel this year so I have some catch up to do :). I'm Perth based. TIA.
To be brutally honest I don’t think it’s worth the money. If you don’t retain Platinum you’ll still “soft land” to Gold with many of the same benefits, and you won’t have forked out thousands of dollars. You can then focus on re-attaining Platinum when you start flying more again.

I'm curious as to what value people place on their status and how much one would spend on flights to maintain gold/platinum status. It's looking like it's going to cost me approx. $600 to get my eligible sectors to maintain gold this year. I have flown lots, but mostly with SQ and using points so I've missed out on the 4 sectors

Good question. I enjoy being Platinum, but everyone is different because what everyone values when flying is different. I fly Virgin about 35 times per year and so I'd value the things I get for being Platinum (as opposed to Gold) as something like the following:

Free internet: $5-$10 per flight.
Extra Velocity points: $5 per flight
Free EconomyX: $10-$15 per flight
Fly Ahead: More difficult to price because I don't use it every flight, but when I do it's fantastic. Maybe $200-$300/year?

So "break even" for me, is probably around the $600-$700 mark, but in practice some of the above (eg. internet, extra legroom) are "nice to have" rather than "need to have". So realistically I wouldn't want to be paying that much.

Depends if Gold Pilot allows this as pilot has slightly different rules / benefits to full Gold.
When platinum you'll be full member so no worries there.
 
Since I stopped business flying, I won’t maintain Platinum and Gold for many more years. I took advantage of the Triple Status promo a few months ago to get to Gold, which got me very close to Plat, so I have J flights for my wife and I next months to get there. And I should maintain Plat next year with what’s planned.

Two reasons. The obvious one is that getting to Plat rather than staying at gold gives me the soft landing option. The second is that Plat will allow access to Etihad F lounge when we fly with them next year.

Alter that it’s a gradual slide downwards…..

I know that's how much it costs, but it's not how much I value it. It costs "more like $50", but I (subjectively and personally) consider its worth to me to be about $10-$15 per flight, so when I'm considering the value of Platinum (to me), that's the monetary value I give to it.

I know that's how much it costs, but it's not how much I value it. It costs "more like $50", but I (subjectively and personally) consider its worth to me to be about $10-$15 per flight, so when I'm considering the value of Platinum (to me), that's the monetary value I give to it.

I'm curious to hear what is the best status run fares at the moment. I need 230 SCs by the end of July to retain Platinum (something that if booked after April will cost $2760).

Currently BNE-MEL in J is $379 (yes I know it was cheaper the other day with the last sale) and nets 80SC so done three times is $1137 and 240SC ~$4.74 per SC.

The ABN business flyer promo is interesting as 6 flights nets 125 Bonus SC. BNE-MEL-LST-MEL-BNE is currently $438 as a choice fare netting 70 SC. Then OOL-SYD-OOL as a choice down/flex back fare $285 with 40SC. Total works out at $723 for 235 SC ~$3.08 per SC (including the promo SCs from completing 6 flights).

Plus with the above right now new business flyer accounts get 50,000 bonus points for completing 6 flights and then 10 points per $ instead of the regular 5 so 7230 points for the flight.
 
Not quite a status run, but I booked a SYD-BNE DPS flight for June using the attached fare basis.

I upgraded SYD BNE for 10K points, but I want to make sure I am not going crazy and confirm that I did indeed book a flex fare please.

A return flex fare to Sydney for $390 gives me 25 status credits each way. Will fly down and return the same day.

Any other suggestions for 50 status credits ex Brisbane?

If you don’t care about timing on Saturday the 22nd it can be done on flex fares out of the Gold Coast for $342 (9:20am down, 6:20pm back but could fly ahead). Shopback also has 3.1% cash back to further sweeten the deal.

Train/bus from Brisbane or anywhere in SEQ to the Gold Coast airport is $1.

And from a full flex fare being a WP you could hope to use your upgrade me Plat passes. Closer to the date a reward seat may open up.
