The view from my "office"

re: The view from my "office"

A pod of SAS troops dropping in to their Swanbourne base this morning from a very high altitude out of a C17A.

I had just got back from a run when I saw the drop. I snapped this and then went for a swim. The C17A had disappeared south over Fremantle, still at high altitude, after making the drop.

Dang! It swung west out towards Rottnest, dropped to barely a few hundred feet, came in over the ocean and very nicely banked left as it crossed the beach just over my head and headed north along the W edge of the SAS base and up the coast. Must have been swinging back to check the brood before returning to Pearce. Couldn't get out of the water fast enough to grab my phone. It would have been a sensational picture :(.

I was amazed how quiet the C17A is.

Spending some time in Cape Town. Fortunate enough to be able to sub-let some office space right across from Kalk Bay harbour.

Might need to face the other way, so that I can actually get some work done!!

If you get the opportunity and like seafood I recommend trying to get in a lunch at The Flagship at Simon's Town - bookings needed as very limited places available. I was fortunate enough to visit 3 months before Chef Bruce Robertson passed away - and it was phenomenal. I've read the new chef has continued the same high standard. It is a real experience.

Isn't Swanbourne a nudist beach?

Actually, strictly speaking, no. Swanbourne beach, where the Swanbourne/Nedlands surf lifesaving club is (and, BTW, hip new restaurant Shoreline) is the true Swanbourne Beach.

The clothing-optional 'Swanbourne' is about 300m N of the true Swanbourne beach and begins at the boundary of the SAS base. That is how it became a free beach about 50 years ago - it is Commonwealth Gov't land and therefore outside the state police jurisdiction, so people took advantage of that.

But maybe more important than that, it is a lovely 2.5 km of pristine and quiet beach, only off-limits periodically when live-firing is occurring (either the SAS or the civilian rifle range - where my dad and I would go shooting back in the day - on weekends). When I can't run N because of live firing (eg. today), I run S to Cottesloe - also 2.5 km. How symmetrical is that?! - and my true summer office :).

A few icons in this frame. Only a short stroll from MIM for a classic QLD counter meal.
