Hmmm, well it was a lot worse than I thought it would be, potholes big enough to swallow small cars in some places, huge chinese trucks belching thick black smoke, cars and trucks just stop on the road when they visit stalls and shops.
Anyway there were some really good twisty sections which would make any motorcyclist very happy! Twisty, up and down. There is a big dam being constructed (yes another one), just north of LP and here the road is badly chopped up, due I'm sure to the construction trucks.
Further north wherever there is work associated with the new high speed rail line it's the same. The scale of this build has to be seen, incredible.
The boss has some photos which I will try and post, I was too busy concentrating on the road to take any. Glad I don't have to drive that road again, whoops, actually we do, Friday from Luang Namtha to Nong Khiaw, then next Monday back to LP.
Couldn't get to Luang Namtha in one trip so we stayed at a really nice hotel called Charming Lao Hotel in Oudomxay, was pleasantly surprised by the room, food and staff, highly recommended.

Drove as close the the chinese border as we could, but the paperwork involved to go into the last Lao town seemed too great, so we turned around and back tracted a bit to Luang Namtha, anyway here is some information on Boten in Laos.
The Rise, Fall and Possible Renewal of a Town in Laos on China’s Border
35 years ago I was on the chinese side of the border in Jinhong and Mengla and some other small towns, the border to Vietnam from China was closed as they were having a spat, the Burmese and Lao borders were also closed. From Luang Namtha you can get a bus there in about 3 hours, how things change!
