The view from my "office"

Our view for the day. The very pretty Killarney Beach, Victoria, which is not far from Port Fairy.

This will be our home for the next five nights as we have set up camp on the foreshore and this beach is one minute from where we are. :)

There is a reef just offshore and this has formed a natural calm lagoon perfect for swimming and snorkelling largely free from the larger surf that is typical for most coastal beaches along the Victorian sea coast.

Our view for the day is the oddly named Tower Hill, in Victoria.

Oddly named as it is a 3km wide volcanic crater with a series of volcanic cones in the middle. The main crater forms a lake and the cones in the middle firm an island which in turn are mainly flooded forming small lakes.

Full of wildlife and vegetation it makes for nice walking in the many walking trails. All this in a setting just off the nearby coast.

The layers from the eruption can be seen below.

The path above is actually the crater lip of one of one of the most recent eruptions, with the pic above it being the crater within.

Today's view is of a memorial to the 4 crew that lost their lives during WW2 on AW 878. It is not just ocean going vessels that have come to grief along the coast.

I have zoomed in to show Lady Julia Percy Island on the horizon.

"Lady Julia Percy Island is Australia’s only off-shore volcano, located 22km from Port Fairy, formed some seven million years ago by violent underwater eruptions related to the final separation of Australia from Antarctica.

Lady Julia Percy Island supports the largest breeding colony of the Australian fur seal. The colony ranges in size from 10,000 to 12,000 animals which is approximately the same size as the colony at Seal Rocks, Phillip Island. "

Aren't Heard and McDonald Islands off-shore volcano's too?

The SA Summer has been a very mild one so far, I think the highest temp has been 38 and that was a one day spike, as opposed to endless days in the high thirties and forties. Of course March can be a heat month so we can wait and see. In the meantime the weather is glorious.

This time next year we will have a deck that properly allows us this view:

300mm in 24 hours at the home office.

My plans for a round of golf are in serious trouble.

I am driving down the Bruce today to BNE to pick up Ron - should be an interesting trip when you look at the cameras on the highway, and they are saying "essential travellers" only !!

I would bow to later research, but as far as I recall, Australia separated finally from Antartica about 30 million years ago. The volcanos in Victoria (and elsewhere ) I think developed from Australia floating over a hot-spot.
