The closure of the first Penal settlement in 1815 was the act that led all of them to be taken to Tasmania.
As for the current call for "Independence" they have short memories. They were indepent but in 2010 managed to find themselves bankrupt.

One does wonder how they would have gone in the Covid pandemic without Australian assistance. It is some of the old Pitcairner families who still do not want the Island opened up to dirty mainland tourists.
No they were paid flights but as it was NZ we put our lifemiles number in so we don't have to buy anymore points for a year.
Yes I saw 5 of the Norfolk parrots-no pics though.
It really was good for the birds though.
We started out visiting the Captain Cook memorial. ..
A beautiful sunny morning so lovely sea colour. The wind came up a bit later. ..
..
.
It is believed this was the first part of the Island seen by Cook's crew. From here a well grassed but steep walk down to the point.Unfortunately mrsdrron's feet wanted to go down faster and she ended up on her derriere.some pain in her left shoulder but fortunately didn't take long to settle.
From the point a walk that some say is the best on Norfolk - the bridle trail.needless to say this wasn't going to happen today. .

We went to the King Tide cafe for lunch and it was pretty good.garlic prawns for mrsdrron and beef ribs in BBQ sauce for me. ..
Then off to Cascade which is their fuel depot but also a whaling station until the mid 60s. ..
..
Their cruise boats have been out of the water for 8 months.
This wharf is where we came for our fishing trip in 1971.The boat was on the wharf in a sling when you got on.Then using the device at the end of the wharf swung out and lowered into the water. As soon as clear of the sling full power and sped away from the wharf before the next wave hit.Coming back we motored over the sling and quickly raised getting out when on the wharf.
That night we went to Hilli for dinner.Rated number 2 on TA.The number 1 restaurant,Dino's,says it is closed until March. However when we drove past it later on all the signs had gone.It might not re open.
We shared a salt and pepper calamari for entrees it was good but unfortunately turned out to be the best dish of the night. .
Mrsdrron had the fish and I the pork belly with crackling.both were overcooked.the crackling had been cremated. ..
We decided to share a baked lemon tart.OK. .
What was worse their wine list consists of the one brand of cheap Griffith wine from De Bortolis with whatever grape type you want.
Would not reccomend.
After dinner we drove down to kingston as someone said there was a light show.well not on Mondays.Just one building with lights on. .
The red bush is the "Norfolk Island" Christmas bush, a hybrid of the NZ version according to the Manager of TravelNorfolk.
It is everywhere on the island, is a very good wind break, but no good as a cut flower in a vase, it drops those red fronds everywhere !!
Lucky the birds like it.
