Time Stands Still on Norfolk Island.

At one time this was an alternate landing point when the sea at Kingston was unfavorable.Glad I have never had to use it.

Then a little further down the road to the hundred acre reserve.

We now headed towards Kingston as we were going to have lunch at the golf club.First a couple of huge Norfolk pine stumps in a property above Kingston.

Here are some of the old pines on the property so you can imagine the size the trees that those stumps were.
..

We then walked around the cemetery.
..

Many young children.
..

And a lot were Irish.
.

When we first came to Norfolk islsand several of the convicts were buried outside the cemetery because of their crimes on Norfolk Island.They have now been moved into the cemetery proper.These are some of those hanged for the 1834 uprising.13 in all were hanged that day.

Some of the soldiers accidently shot when out in the woods.

or drowned

or murdered.
..

Though the last pic is the grave of an American whaler murdered on board his ship.
And the grave of a prominent author who made Norfolk Island her home.

So to the Golf club.Nice view from the restaurant.

Entering the dining room I hear-drron.It came from another retired Sunshine Coast physician.it is a very long time since we have met on the Coast.In fact the last place we met was the dining room of the Holiday Inn SCL 3.5 years ago.

A limited menu.Mrsdrron had the calamari and chips and I the southern fried chicken and chips.

It was OK certainly not outstanding.
We stopped a little way up the hill for a view over Kingston.The major lookout was already taken by a large tour bus.

And a stop at the Bond store to pick up a discounted gin.

Back at the house I noticed the "ghost rafts".Muttonbirds congregation on the water waiting for darkness before going back to their burrows.

There was little wind and the temperature was reasonable so we stayed outside for the sunset.Once again lots of clouds.

The loud noise occurred again at night.It sounded right underneath us and the house on the main bedroom side is like an old Queenslander so open underneath.I decided to get up and go to investigate.It turned out the noise came from the cliff.And you could hear similiar noises from the cliffs on either side of us.Turns out it is nesting seabirds according to a local birding legend.I guess they will need some double glazing.

Thursday and we started again at Fisherman's lane to check on the coughy chicks.They were doing well with more visible.

A quick stop at the Botanic Gardens trying to catch a parrot.No luck but going a different way saw a different tree.

It was then a stop above Kingston.We had missed the tourists.Just before you another magnificent specimen of figs.Obviously more than 1 tree.

We then went down to the waterfront for a closer look.

The sea was a lot more conducive to port activities but no marine traffic.

And out in front of the barracks is where HMS Sirius was lost.

Then around to Emily bay again.The remains of the first windmill.

Now one thing that was absent when we first came in 1971 was the Polynesian history of the Island.it is a comparatively recent discoveryThe Polynesian village was right in front of Government House.

I had a problem with the sun.

Over the road was one of the first burial grounds.

A beautiful spot.

And in those days there were proper steps down to the beach.
