Tokyo Haneda slot - 2025

Coming through SYD intl a few times I’ve noticed the JAL flight load is listed in the low 100s. This was a 777 as well. I suspect JL has the weakest brand of the operators to/from Australia, but they’re still pretty poor numbers.
I think the whole market is a bit over capacity... JAL has a better load factor than ANA for example, who are regularly around 50-60% so they are probably more likely to drop or rejig something.

I always thought JAL are playing at a slightly different game since their Y is so low density, so they're probably chasing a higher fare over volume like ANA, QF etc have to... Every time I fly QF in/out of HND it seems like Y is mostly school groups.
JL is premium heavy. There's a lot of business traffic between Sydney and Tokyo as well.

Also unlike NH which regularly is targetting Aussies JL makes minimal effort on that front and instead focuses more on their own JP market. After all they're not chasing Aussies flying to Japan rather Japanese flying to and from Australia.

IASC awarded the slot faster then expected.
The submission deadline was last Wednesday and they had said they wanted to assign the slot by Oct 10. Normally that means they'll announce on that date.

My first successful request:
QF25 26 Jun SYD-HND I1 -> U1 Declined
QF59 26 Jun SYD-HND I1 -> U1 Approved and booked
I believe these will change as from 30 March 2025 the schedule should look like this:

I wouldn’t worry as you’ll automatically be rebooked but something to keep in mind given you’ll likely end up on the QF25 anyway once they make the schedule changes. These changes haven’t been loaded yet as they’ve only just been given approval.

When they are loaded look out for the change email and note you may be eligible for additional options via the self rebooking tool.

Ah cough yeah, I've just realised I'll likely be affected by this too (flying in late April). Good heads up.

You could always play a game of chance and book everything assuming you’ll arrive a day later should you get moved to QF25 instead.

And if you get there a day earlier on QF59 instead, could book a cheaper hotel for a day?

That's true, but if they're reducing capacity to Sydney then someone people are gonna have to get re-routed. Specifically I'm booked on the daytime HND-SYD which will no longer exist. I guess most likely I'll take a re-routing via. BNE (more status credits this way too :) )

Once you get the change notice you'll likely get one option to accept but via the self service tool can pick +/-7 days on other services via the following link (obviously will only work after the schedule change):
https://servicing.qantas.com/servicing/self-reaccommodation/retrieve
Make sure to trip check, though; at times, Qantas may just decide to move you if you don't respond within 24 hours (even though it's meant to be 7+ days if it's quite further out). I've had that happen twice on a domestic flight and once in intl when they tried to 'upsell me' for a PER-LHR flight when it still needed to stop over at SIN anyways for refuelling due to the flight route adjustment.

Yes I specifically booked daytime flight to SYD in May to avoid an overnight home from ICN. This schedule change would mean needing to take another days leave from work, as no way could get to work by 9am nor be functional with no sleep (impossible to sleep in whY).

I'd need to look if there was a daytime JAL flight instead or also need to come home via BNE. Such a dud call to cull the SYD daytime flight, plus financial impact as booked airport hotel for early morning departure which not need it late night departure, better to stay in Tokyo.

Seriously why all the overnight flights?

Multiple factors, but slot availability and aircraft utilisation seem the major factors for SYD-HND.
But why give BNE the precious day slot instead of leaving the SYD flight in the day slot? You'd think you use best slot for biggest market.

Because there's only one flight to SYD a day, and evidently they think it's better off as an overnight. Evidently Qantas doesn't see the day slot as more precious than the night slot.

Yep, I'm impacted too :( Used a Qantas hotels $100 voucher which cannot be refunded.
daytime JAL flight
JL51 is overnight :(
The only daytime will be ANA's NH889

So I need to insist I'm moved to BNE flight then, hopefully being WP might help with that (but will require an overnight in Brisbane and being on early morning flight to get t work on time come Monday since last flight form BNE to SYD is at 8:45pm which doesn't meet MCT).

Or work out a multi-stop way home via somewhere else.

Or even hope their request gets denied and SYD flights remain in original slot.

We're OT but that comes down to yield.

The numbers in EF can only be used as a very rough guide, but I see more 9s on the day flight than I do on the overnight flight.

That doesn't directly corelate to revenue or profit, but it certainly appears loads are higher at night than they are in the day.

To get back on topic:

SYD-SCL various dates June I5>I3 declined

School holidays so not surprised.

Because that flight has been consistently cheaper (lower loads) throughout this whole year. In fact when booking Y for November trip, the evening departure were down to flex only at $1800 whilst the morning had super sale at $550.

You're probably in the minority that wants the morning flight. Departing SYD it's not too bad but departing HND its pretty bad.

My flight at the end of August had 25 in Y, and talking to the crew they said this wasn’t unusual, Japan-Australia flight traffic prefers overnight flights apparently, I don’t.

People are crazy, the new SYD overnight flights will get back into SYD too late to go to work on arrival day so defeats the purpose of the punishing overnight. Arriving into SYD early evening, was perfect, no need to sleep on plane and home well before bed time.

Im very saddened to hear the day flight is being canned as it is the only reason we were coming home via Japan.

Makes future Japan trips only an option if J CRs are available; as at least in J one can get some sleep, something that is impossible in whY.

I wonder what the loads on NH889 are like. I've taken it once, but only in J so couldn't observe economy load.

Remains to be seen whether that day flight will be replaced by a service from NRT. Perhaps not as convenient, but a potential option none-the-less.

Nothing has been announced looks like coming home via BNE the only day option, but adds the cost of a hotel at BNE as arrives too late to connect onto SYD; will need to be on 6am form BNE the following day to be at work by 9:30am.
