Tokyo Haneda slot - how will Virgin Operate it?

Probably a good argument why not to approve a hypothetical JL/QF JV considering how far ahead by passenger loads they were against NH and VA.

Holy cow. Maybe I need to spend some VS miles on NH flights to go see Hello Kitty, before NH pulls the plug too. Their load factor is not really any better than VA
Have to wonder how ANA loads were in 2019 with daily flights from PER and SYD to TYO.

IMO I think NH are suffering the same issues as most Indonesian carriers (on the Australia Bali market) when it comes to outbound market ex-Australia.

QF and JL are the established carriers on their home POS plus they also get some considerable inbound traffic (away POS).

This largely leaves NH with the scraps (even taking into consideration the VA FF partnership) and the Low Yen not improving their outbound (towards Australia) loads.

NH is also running double daily syd - hnd so there's a lot more capacity to the same location.

I also believe their 787 seats has a much denser configuration than JL (until JL swapped to the 777 which this data won't include) so there's just more seats than JL on offer

People didn't want to fly from Australia to Japan via a regional port, on a narrow body jet, without flatbeds in business, without seatback IFE in any cabin, without international lounges, without any service in economy aside from tea/coffee/water, where onward connections on the local partner (ANA) are similarly lounge-less for Velocity elites... wow, who could have seen that coming. The experience sounded so very wonderful.🤣

Honestly, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Pretending to be something better than Jetstar while arguably delivering a worse overall travel experience than Jetstar isn't exactly a recipe for success, unless you compete hard on price, but there goes any smidgen of a margin...

Thank our (Queensland) taxpayer dollars through the AAIF subsidy scheme for lasting as long as it did. Considering it was marketed as an inbound route with no contingency plans for outbound marketing, it's no surprise they've struggled.

Slot squatting by Bain who thought that they were the cleverest in the room. Not looking so clever now by missing the IPO window with presumably the capacity handed back to Qantstar just in time for the profitable ski season. Facepalm moment for Bain.
Clear case of slot hoarding, to either use it or lose it, QLD came to the party with tax payers moolah, VA had little to lose, rather the clever one in the room imo.

Ski season in Japan? Facepalm, northern hemisphere ski season our summer.

IPO window....when was that? Been next to bugger all IPO's of late, oh yeah GYG, any others of note? no.

Just returned to my Seoul hotel, read the news about VA puling out of HND and checked my email.

I have a Japan trip booked for October/November and just received notification my return flight seems to be cancelled. They want me to return a day earlier which does not suit me.

It looks like they are beginning to pull flights.

I don't feel like a long phone call back to Oz which is the only way they seem to want to do business. From past experience thee platinum email section is usually quite unhelpful and slow to respond.

Appears that Monday and Wednesday flights (with some slight exceptions) have been cut from the beginning of September until mid-November.

This isn't the first time they've reduced to 5x weekly. Same thing happened throughout June.

Ok this is not good. Looks like my flight on Wednesday 10th sept outbound now just says Perth to Brisbane...and somehow on the app has lost onward to Cairns then Haneda but has the full return on the 17th. Thanks VA for possibly ruining this holiday. I have seen no e mail as yet from VA....

Sounds like my Covid experience when VA cancelled the BNE -HND legs of my SYD - HND return booking and then asked me to confirm that I would still be taking the SYD - BNE - SYD legs.

I've seen this a few times before, I notice a change well before an email arrives.

Best to be proactive, get on the blower with adjusted plans, no point fighting a fight you can't win. Refund or change your plans by a day or 2. Say it's a big inconvenience etc, don't be critical and see what happens.
Being courteous goes further than the other direction I've found.

Ofcourse everything closed at the moment sominguess it will.be tomorrow morning.

Don’t forget this one route cost Virgin a single MAX. They could get two Bali returns for the same aircraft.

At those loads mentioned above, plus the taxes/fuel costs for such a flight, seems like it was a nice money burner!
