Perhaps they are cleverer than you realise - but not in a positive way.Councils are so clever...
With street trees that cause problems then the Council spends money year in and year out on that probem. Gum tree leaves are amongst the slowest (of any tree species) to decompose and cause issues with drain blockages as well as slipping issues when the wet weather hits (in our area for example).
Council tenders for the job to look after these issues and somebody gets the job/money. Amazing how relatives and friends seem to win many contracts from some councils.
Also our Council planted a large number of new gums about 4 years back. Oddly, most were planted under power lines. Council made ONE BIG mistake - they left the tree tags on.
These gums were recommended by the nursery to only be planted on farms and parks of more than 2 hectares in size as they grow to 40+ metres.
Remember our Council planted a good proportion under the powerlines.
A job for life to the contractors who get the contract for pruning them every year.
