So when a SA player is next caught ball tampering, I’m sure they will get a good talking to. Not much else will happen, just as with the English. And the South African players and media given their current captain Faf has been caught altering balls twice, and never missed a single game
But I'm glad CA has been harsh - sets a very strong precedent for the next person caught
I don’t think CA decided anything about this saga within a cone of silence. Clearly the return of Smith to a leadership role depends partly on the acceptance of the fans and the rest of the team.Sure. But bear in mind that they had no say in what Cricket Australia decided.
Their punishment is deserved. But it is also harsh. I do fear somewhat for their mental state down the track.
Remember Shane Warne was banned for 12 months IIRC for drug use and came back as good as ever. He never captained Australia though he would have been eccellent at it. His offfield dalliances I'm sure didn't elp his public image

Sandpaper. They actually used sandpaper. With Warner instructing Bancroft on how to do it. Toxic person. I hope Smith finds a way back to cricket. Warner can just, go away. Don’t want to hear from him again. Bancroft may or may not find his way back; there are plenty of others who will fill that gap. He was lucky to be there in the first place. I don’t really care there.
The punishment is about right. I think it will be enough to prevent a return to Oz cricket for Warner; he won’t get the crowd support, they won’t pick him as he will be out of form and a team distraction. He will make his money playing IPL eventually. Smith hopefully can somehow retain form without playing officially. Bancroft - meh.
When I saw the photo my first thought was sandpaper and how many of us have that lying around when travelling.
Meaning someone had to go out, find a SA hardware store to buy it or toddle into dads garage to find some before packing it with the baggy green for the trip.
I did not know this! Thanks for the intel, I thought damaged bat = get a new bat.....Sandpaper is actually a pretty common item in a professional batsmen's kit bag. The reason for this is that their bats a lot of the time get small marks or ships on them, so they need to sand them down. Some of them also change bat sponsors for different formats, so while they don't actually change the bat they will change the sponsor sticker on it, and where some of the sticker remains they will use the sandpaper to rub it off.
Sandpaper is actually used to smooth the edges of the bats etc.....there are some superstious players who don't like a red mark on the edge of their bat and will sandpaper the mark off ASAP, so I suspect most players will have sandpaper in their kit. So it is not as bad as you think! When I saw the photo my first thought was sandpaper and how many of us have that lying around when travelling.

Is this what the juniors are being taught these days? Crazy. Just nuts.
Any shorter banishment and it’s no real penalty at all due to season timings.

They'd miss a test series and a 5 or 6 limited over series, that's a fair whack of potential game payments there - so to say it would be no real penalty is misleading.
Okay so now the additional CA sanctions have been released. Time to move on and give them some space to contemplate their future and for us to focus on the next Test.

A six month ban would only see them missing some one day/T20 fixtures. This is the Test Team. The teams are very different.
It had to be a 12 month ban or they would not miss any Test matches other than the one starting tomorrow. Anything less would not be enough. As previously stated.
