"TrouserGate" - Australian Cricketers Caught Ball Tampering

Spare me! Now Mickey Arthur is venting that he tried to change the culture but was sacked for his efforts. Sheesh. Not that he was a poor coach who had no understanding of Australian culture and it would have all been solved by making players fill out homework forms instead of training?

It’s all getting reduculous with the hacks and has beens and English cricket captains telling us they knew the “problem” all along...

Warnie seem to be one of them who is saying sensible and sane things, and that indeed is a surprise.:)

I was really surprised what Warnie wrote as it seemed quite balanced (especially for him)

I'm thinking about contacting SACA and asking if they're giving discounts for memberships this year to get people to maintain their membership or for people thinking about joining

Perhaps someone can explain what can possibly be gained by having the players front press conferences. Management first failed them by having them front the press in Sth Africa on the same afternoon and now it is continuing

Yes! Very balanced and rational I thought without the hyperbole of other self appointed experts in morals and ex-players. And he did serve out a term for taking his Mom’s ‘advice’. :)

Maybe he has a ghost writer!

Do you understand how advertising works?

Certainly do and I haven't actually commented on the decision they have made, but the fact that I find their comments quite amusing considering where it is coming from.

It was quite sad watching Steve Smith's press conference. If anyone still thinks the punishment is too lenient after watching that well.......

It’s unfortunate he didn’t have a coach that worked to strengthen his style especially with Warner.

Smith was being compared with Bradman. Think that's now gone.

Without trying to stir things up too much, while Bradman was the greatest batsmen ever; there are a whole lot of negative stories out there about his character and a myriad of people who did not respect him at all.

I've not really got a view in it as it was before my time, so take of that what you will.

Wasn't it. If the media don't leace him alone for a little bit to gather himself they need a kick up the back side.

What I find a little strange is that Smith & Bancroft were made to do a presser, still nothing from Warner except a Twitter post....

I don’t think they were made to do it. Says something for their character that they chose to....it’s not going away, and they have shown some courage to front up straight away on arrival at least.
Warner choosing to tweet ‘yeah, sorry, might talk in a few days, see ya’ .......well....seems to sum up the way the story, and responsibility seems to have panned out.
Smith and Bancroft only barely deflecting questions on Warner in this speak loudly also

Warner flies back to Syd via EK, Smith via SQ and Bancroft to Per via ?SA...Qf has a direct flight bet Jnb and Syd....wonder why Warner and Smith didn't fly back with Qf....will leave it there! I predict Smith and possibly Bancroft will come back better and stronger....and they will then tell the companies that abandoned them now to get stuffed!

Telling (well to me anyway) that he failed to address the nub of the issue, and that is the sport ethos that they have abandoned.
Thinking about the consequences before you cheat is quite different to understanding and applying the ethics of fair play.
Cricket has a long way to go yet it seems

Apologies if this comes out the wrong way.

I have all the time in the world for Smith and have difficulty understanding what he did. He'll be forgiven but may never captain Australia again.

Warner does not belong . Never understood him being vice-captain. Hope to never see him again.

Bancroft tries hard but there's a huge gap between Shield and test cricket.

Let's hope the culture of current test team is put to bed. No more sledging. Just play cricket and try your best.

Every sport does though. People purposely breaking the rules (small and large) happens in every single sport to gain an advantage, not only widespread in cricket. And with sports now being professional and the amount of money in it your going to continue to have professional players in every sport break rules to gain an advantage over the opposition.

As cynical as it may seem, fair play in professional sport is no longer common place and that is because they've all become businesses where public popularity = $$$$$$.

Smith was being compared with Bradman. Think that's now gone.
No. Not at all. A legend, yes. A national hero, yes. A man who had the best interests of Australian cricket at heart, no.

Bradman’s authoritarian rule over the ACB was one of the driving forces that caused the revolt and the Packer professional coloured cricket series. Ask Chapelli his opinion.

Morals are irrelevant. Performance is what matters in sport. Statistics will show Smith being closest to Bradman even if he never plays another match.

Unfortunately, other sports even value “performance” over attacking people in their home in New York, bashing women, dealing in cocaine,...

Just look at all the others who have been convicted over ball tampering, including captains of SA, England, Tandulka and others.

Smiths ‘error’ was to be upfront, responsible and own up to his shortcomings and take responsibility for the fact that while he didn’t do the ‘crime’ he acquiesed to the actions did not prevent it. Very harsh punishment of year ban and 5-10 million dollars in lost earnings and sponsorship.

Give it a year before you make such comments.

Before it catches up with cycling, athletics, swimming and any other sport you care to mention that has $$ at stake?
Those sports have far more blatant examples of 'considered' cheating.

…aaand that makes it ok ?

clearly not.
But you said "cricket has a long way to go yet it seems", in the context of sporting ethos.
Can you divulge which sports cricket needs to aspire to, in the context of your comment?

Statistics will show Smith being closest to Bradman even if he never plays another match.
Statistics can be extremely misleading and do injustice to those that have performed throughout their careers.

Voges test average of 61.87 and first class average of 46.42. He played 20 tests. A few lucky not outs against New Zealand and West Indies. Failed miserably against England and India.

Should have played a few more tests as he is not entitled to be spoken in the same breath as Border, Chappell, Tendulkar, Richards, Lara and Kallis.

Just saw the Smith interview.... when he mentioned disappointing his parents, for the first time, I felt sympathy for him. It's not something one gets over easily.
