"TrouserGate" - Australian Cricketers Caught Ball Tampering

Watched until after tea (12:30am BNE time) because I had a feeling there would be wickets - set enough 2 in 2 balls. Faf, what were you doing? He jumped out to the hall. Had he offered any shot - not out, as he was hit outside off.

Still don’t know the score at stumps but happy to see the new team make up. Some great fielding to save 4’s

Oh that meme - I shouldn’t laugh. Even my wife had a giggle

Warner to talk at 11am SYD time. Jeff Thompson commenting on Sunrise.

He needs to be authentic, own up and be contrite. Will he announce his retirement from Test cricket or will he play in the Sheffield Shield next year as his springboard back into the team

My bet is that he will announce his retirement as though he is taking back control of his destiny. Then after 12 months hop back on the IPL bandwagon. That way he doesn't have to ask for forgiveness. He probably has no care for what we think about him. On SA radio anyway there is no love for him. Nor Lehman except for a few fanbois from his earlier life here. Bets?

My bet is that he’ll sound like an idiot who’s been given a bit of media coaching but struggled to understand it, and use a few words that have been fed to him by the ACA like ‘context’.

Never mind that he was largely responsible for creating that context.

Good point. The words might come out but accompanied by the confused face. Suspect legal assistance as well.

So far so good on Warner’s part. More than I expected although he didn’t really apologise that much to the player he influenced. Ok, lost my bet, and am pleased I did. He does seem genuinely contrite. Well done to him. Not sure it will get him back as I think there is a new culture in planning. Evading the ‘who else was involved’ question though. Fair enough I think.

When asked twice if anyone else is involved, he avoided the question. That hardly puts the issue to bed

I understand he might not want to dob anyone else in, but as you say, by not stating No (other than the 2 we know about), he has left a gaping hole. I think his legal team have reinforced “I am taking responsibility for my own actions”. But he had a very scripted response to questions and would not answer if he’d done this before. CA will not be happy. It’s going to blow again. His gap will be filled by “its happened before and there were others involved.”

Appalling press conference by Warner. Avoided the key Qs so why bother taking Qs from the reporters? He will NEVER play for Australia again and unlike Smith and Bancroft, willl never get the Australian's public's respect and trust again....I suspect ditto for CA as well!

In fairness his statement was fine. His responses to the questions were appalling. What a mess.

Anyone can read a statement.
Sure. But his delivery was more emotional than I expected. I’m not a Warner fan and was surprised. But haven’t converted to being a fan. After his answers that will not happen.

Consensus on the sports show radio here is that he just made the situation 10 times worse.

For himself, or for "Australian cricket"? I reckon things are already looking up for the latter, and don't care about the former.

Cricket Australia, the organisation. Made it much worse for them. The Team - depends on what the enquiry finds. I couldn’t care less about Warner.

I also get the impression DW has been using his wife and kids as tools to some extent. I'm sure there was a way to avoid subjecting them to the media scrum upon arrival, and I think having Candice appear today was more a matter of optics than DW needing support.

For the record, I wouldn't want my husband attempting to defend my honour in caveman fashion... in the same circumstances, an opportunity for QdK to repeat his words to my face would have sufficed.

Cricket Australia have hardly covered themselves in glory in this.

I think a lot of what has happened is based on some simmering discontent that the Australia public has had with cricket for a few years.

CA have a lot of work to do....

Totally has. There was no need for him to bring them out the other night at the airport. What parent would submit them to the scrum knowingly. All it would have taken was for him to move ahead by a few minutes.

Can anyone ever remember a player from any country apologising for ball tampering before?
