TV series discussion {'ware Spoiler Alert}

Watched Dr Who this morning at 5am on iview and again now on TV. Whovians next.

I didn't realise it went up on Iview earlier. I would have watched it hours ago. I've just finished watching it on Iview as we're having problems with our media system. I'll catch up with Whovians later in the week. I think I'm going to enjoy the Christmas episode, even with the regeneration at the end. I think it is going to be really fanish (not sure of the spelling of that but I'm sure there will be lots of references to previous episode and lots of funny dialogue between the two main characters)

This seems as good a place as any to ask my question. First, I need to declare that I don't watch much TV ... local, SBS and ANC news almost every night, but that's all. I cancelled my Foxtel subscription months ago after not having used it for months before that.

But what on earth is the attraction of the various cooking shows? Both the "I'm travelling around Italy and will show you all my favourite stuff" and the masterchef type show.

I mean cooking/eating involves sight, smell, taste and maybe a sense of anticipation. A TV show can only use the first, and maybe the last sense. So what's the attraction? Does anyone actually jot down the recipes and try them themselves?

Oh, an exception to my opinion of cooking shows is Nigella. I always try to watch Nigella - its purely visual.

Actually lately I find myself enjoying the travel type cooking shows. Interesting places, strange cuisine... can lead to new travel plans and such.

The either shows, competition type ones.... yeah they aren't great.

I enjoy all French cookery programs and most cooking shows on SBS. Maeve OMara has excellent programs. These usually show a little of the scenery and culture. The competition stuff - entertainment not cooking.

Just finished first season of Broadchurch. I'd downloaded to watch on holiday. Brilliant series.

I've gone off a lot of cookery shows in the past few years. There seems to be a plethora of self indulgent wanna be types who spend most of the time waxing lyrical about not very much in particular and even less about food.
Nigella was fun, not for the techniques, but for the sheer awfulness of dishes, loaded with fat, chocolate, cream etc and then having her 'sneak' a midnight snack. The early Delia's were good as well. Rick Stein was pretty interesting in the very early series (with his little dog). He has become a bit of a bore now IMO. There is a lot of 'I remember when' nostalgia from him. The ones I dislike the most are the barefoot contessa type where the person has absolutely no cred in the cookery realm but give me a talented chef with a program that sets out to inform then I will be glued to the set. :)

Unfortunately you can't watch SBS On Demand with a Sony TV. The app or widget has been pulled.

My Sony updated last week and I lost Freeview Plus. I still have SBS On Demand with the app, on the app page. You may have to update the app or download from Google Play. You also may have to link to Facebook.

I finally watched GoT S6 Ep 10 last month while flying around the USA. First started watching the series about three years ago, so 60 episodes in that time.

Due to the delay in my watching I had a personal moratorium on this thread.

It seems that in the near future the shutters will go up again, so have fun! It may be next June before I finish series seven ....

We finished GLOW, the Netflix 80's womens wrestling series, last night and as teenagers of the 80's we rated it. The Handmaid's Tale was a big winner for us too. Looking forward to seeing if Prime Suspect 1973 can deliver.

We watched the final GLOW episode as well this week. It was quite good overall I thought and the final fight was just like it used to be.:)
Putting off Handmaid's Tale at the moment but will get to it soon. Heard there have been lots of complaints about the number and placement of the ads during the show.

Got the freeview plus working again. Had to disconnect the TV from powerpoint to power down the TV. After a minute or so reconnected the TV and powered back up. Lo and Behold Freeview Plus working again.

That move works on many electrical devices. If there is a battery back up removing the battery and powering down should get you back.
