Several large international carriers — including Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Aeroflot — continued to fly in and out of Tehran after Iran fired missiles at the military bases in Iraq, though some later cancelled flights.

After the FAA notices, 12 airliners took off or landed without incident early on Wednesday at Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport, according to data from Flightradar24. Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 was number 13.

"It was awfully peculiar and awfully risky," said Peter Goelz, a former managing director of the US National Transportation Safety Board. "That's a theatre of war and these guys were acting like there was nothing going on."

Incoming missile would be travelling much faster than a climbing aircraft. Also its a completely different type of missile system to intercept an incoming missile as opposed to an anti-aircraft missile.

I never considered that there are charges for overflying a countries airspace. If this is so then is there a standard international fee and how much is it. If so, is it calculated by the number of soles on board or the size of the plane or potential payload? Interesting!

Each country sets its own fees. Flat rate per aircraft, weight of aircraft , duration of overflight, domestic vs international, landing and departing from that country’s airport may change the overflight fee etc etc

generally number of passengers are not part of the assessment

I just find it a little interesting that in the hours after the crash Reuters put out a release that intelligence sources in the US,Canada and Europe said they believed it was an engine failure-see my post 42,Now similiar sources 24 hours later say it was shot down.Wouldn't be the first time such efforts turned out to be a deliberate ruse.EG the Syrian gas attacks in Douma where there has come to light a dissenting report from Chemical warfare investigations unit by an expert who was on site that the gas canisters hadn't been dropped from an aircraft.

I think overflight fees based on flight distance not number of souls onboard flight. And varies between countries...but I could be wrong...

It’s worth noting that these missiles are generally fired as salvoes of two.

Suggestion on Ch7 news tonight that it was two missiles.

It isn’t a flat rate. It varies by type for a start. My understanding is that Iran was expensive, but otherwise a good route.

You’re right, in that intelligence isn’t always intelligent. Assuming the videos are true, I don’t think you’ll find many of the world’s pilots who think it was an internal issue...other than the engine fire that the first missile started.

But, I do get the feeling that there was, and is, a concerted attempt to cool this down a bit. The Iranians have managed to massively embarrass themselves, and, the US does not actually need to push this any further. It could stop at this point.

That would mean counting the number of soles, and then dividing by 2, in order to determine the total number of passengers, assuming that each passenger has one sole on each shoe.

I spent 30 days travelling through Iran in 2018. Out of the 93 countries I've travelled to, it was one of my favourite. The people were the most amazing I've met anywhere in my travels.

Iran's retaliation to the US assassination was laughable but all they wanted to do was show they launched some missiles and then could claim whatever they wanted in internal Iranian state press (which was that they killed 80 US soldiers...).

The Iranian general was playing stupid games and won a stupid prize for his trouble. The Iranians would probably have known the US embassy in Iraq was a red line, but probably wouldn't have counted on the response. Neither would desire a full-scale war and I think your final sentence is on the money, assuming it is proven that a missile of theirs brought down the aircraft.
