It seems clear from the statements so far that Iran lost control of events in their country on that night. Airspace should have been closed but it wasn't. Military communications may have failed, but poor training is more likely a major contributor just as in MH17.

It is a concern though that planes are being re-routed over Afghanistan because it is safer.

Airspace should probably have been closed - but it's also up to the airlines to take some responsibility here. Even if airspace remains open, they should be assessing whether or not it is safe to fly. Would it have made any difference if the flight was in daytime and perhaps more easy to identify? Should Ukraine Int have delayed their departure?

We know after MH17 that 'open' airspace means relatively little.

Ultimately decision on whether the state of aircraft, weather and operational conditions etc exceed minimum requirements for safe flight rests with PIC. Even if airport had not closed, decision by several airlines to keep flying was irresponsible at best given risk

Which was safer AT THAT TIME: flying away from Tehran, or staying in Tehran for the expected escalation?
Iran apparently has a highly trained and capable military and other aircraft have departed: what is unsafe?

It's called the fog of war for a reason and humans remain very fallible. This was an avoidable tragedy and like most tragedies it will have many causes during the chain of events.

A related question: If the multiple videos of the event hadn't appeared over the past 48hrs, who believes that the Iranians would have confessed anyway? I certainly don't.

Presuming the plane was in fact shot down by Iran then is it fair to say that if Trump had not ordered the killing of the soldier then the horrible downing of the aircraft possibly would not have happened?

Soleimani was a terrorist, not a soldier.

I expect that there will be entry, and exit, holes pretty much all over the aircraft. My comment was really in reference to the coughpit comment though. That floor area is obscured in all of the images that I've seen, and what you can see of the coughpit area doesn't seem to be peppered. MH was full of holes in that area.

I know that it's pretty much irrelevant.

The key words being "proper investigation". I have my doubts. It will be a blame the lowest level bloke who pulled the trigger and we've dealt with him so please resume normal service. As normal as Iran is not.

If it was shot down as a 'tit-for-tat', then that would be a reasonable argument.

That still would not have been a remotely reasonable argument (to blame President Trump for Iran shooting down a civilian airliner).

I spent 30 days travelling through Iran in 2018. Out of the 93 countries I've travelled to, it was one of my favourite. The people were the most amazing I've met anywhere in my travels.

No-one's arguing that Iranians are not wonderful people. The regime which holds them captive is despicable however.

The quote I was replying to was saying not to travel to Iran. I was just providing my experience of having travelled to Iran recently.
