cancelled my card the other day -(approx 40k annual spend) offered balance transfer lo rate offer and declined, cancelled straight away. (opposite to Amex who kept offering me fee free card for years)

Credit where due.
Informed tonight I would get my 12445 QFF points on last bill before cancelling transferred within 7 days!
PHEW!

Said goodbye to my card today. I wasn''t made any offers to tempt me to retain the card, I was just reminded that there was travel insurance and rewards available if I used the card. Who'd have thought! I replied that it wasn't enough to make me keep the card.

Unable to access account online as well after the Mac Plat Visa got approved!

Cancelled card as no facility for them to waive fees. Bonus offer after the agent consulting someone was transfer of balance for 6.99%. Politely declined. Spend was ~25k

Looks like it is a process for them to send out last 6 months statements after account cancellation as online access gets revoked.

Guys careful with this one. I cancelled the card on the 15th (which they confirmed on the phone just now) but got a statement today with Annual charge fee of $149 on it along with another couple of outstanding charges! There is some connection between this and the Mac card as the Jetstar help desk agent (In Manila is my guess) told me that I called them to activate a card. I told her it was the Mac card and I called the appropriate number.

They are willing to reverse the charge but it will only appear as a credit on the next statement and to get the money back, I need to call them for them to do an electronic transfer or send a cheque. Big mess. They were not able to answer how they charged me in the first place when the card was cancelled over 3 weeks ago!

Finally after speaking to a supervisor, managed them to do the reversal immediately so they do not direct debit the annual fee (along with the couple of other charges) from my bank account.

Rang up to cancel the card last week but was unable to as I have an outstanding disputed charge investigation.

However, after making it clear I was closing the card to avoid the annual fee, I received and email from card support stating that the fee would be charged, but reversed again once the charge dispute investigation had finished (and then the card closed).

i got this card 9-10 months ago or so and have hardly used it.... to my surprise i got an invitation to increase my limit from 20 to 30k - they must be desperate to be giving away such large sums of unsecured credit !! if they had a proper website and its payment hit the account overnight like most card providers, i'd probably keep this card but alas ill bin it next month after easter.

I also received an invitation to increase my credit limit 2 days before I rang them to cancel it. Like you I hadn't used the card much.

Called to cancel the card on the day after being charged the annual fee. Told the agent i would be paying the balance less the annual fee but she said she couldnt credit the annual fee so asked if i would mind paying the annual fee as well and they would send me a refund. No i told her i would NOT be paying the annual fee.

I rang up and threatened to cancel my card today. They gave me 750 bonus points, not bad pay for 10 minutes work.

Always a good idea to note when approval and close it a week before its anniversary if you don't want to pay the annual fee.

I called to cancel last night. Service agent couldn't do it and promised a call-back at my preferred time of 9pm. I wasn't very surprised not to receive a call.

Rang again today; apparently the daytime operators can cancel the card. No counter offer, no points, nothing except "sorry to hear that". I put a bit over $20k through it during the 12months.

My statement date was apparently a few days after the anniversary (not quite sure how you are supposed to know that - I can't find any reference). Anyway, the annual fee had already posted, and because there were 2 transactions after the annual fee date, they would only pro-rata the fee and give me 11 months back.

I have kept a pdf of all my statements and despite being approved for the card in early April 2012, and balance transfer only processed in mid April, my first statement date period started on 28 March 2012. Nevertheless the annual fee appeared on my account yesterday (22 March), which seems cheeky. I hope I don't have to wait until Monday for a 'daytime' operator who can actually do anything.

Guess what....

Full amount due, including the annual fee has been taken out of my savings account. grrrr

Had to call them again and they are going to transfer it back and can take upto 5 days!

Don't know what else to say re this.

Yea, rang to cancel... got told cancellations was busy... I said I would wait... waited 20 minutes, got offered just a balance transfer, so cancelled.

Got a payout figure mailed to me.

Bpayed it the next dya.... then couple of weeks later, got a statement asking for $248.xx.

Rang them up, and the stupid idiot told me that was $149 annual fee + interest from my last statement.

I went off my nut at her, as I new that I was not suppose to have been charged interest.... she explained that it was because I cancelled my card and didn't pay off the final balance immediately. It got escalated and they said they would call me back.

Four days later, they call me back and inform me that it was for $149 annual fee + purchases that were processed after cancellation, with $0 interest. This matches up with the statement.

Obviously, paying the purchases off, then they will credit the annual fee.... then that will be it.

Having said that, had 0 problems when I had the card, and it served me exceptionally well for a primary card.

Just got an Amex Discovery.... but, I really want a Visa or MC 1:1 card with $0 annual fee for first year + points.... can't find any good offers ATM, but expecting some come end of financial year.

Got my statement with the annual fee, tried to cancel card, no one can answer whether they can reverse the pro-rata annual fee, said I would receive a call back but never got one, called the 5th time and even got escalated to supervisor in Manila...but still cannot answer my question.

He said I have no option at this stage, he said the best he can offer was Qantas Frequent flyer points.
He reminded me that $1 = 1 QFF, so he can offer 200 Frequently Flyer points, so that's $200 worth in compensation to the annual fee.

Must think I'm a 5 years old. I should have said, ok, I will save you $50. Instead of 200 Points which equates to $200, how about you refund me $150 in fees and you can save the company $50 :)

I called and cancelled my card before the annual fee was due. It was surprisingly easy. I was expecting issues after reading a few of the other posts.

LOL. you should realise that some of us cannot get this card :)
And here you are cancelling it ;)

Newk, is this the same problem as you have not being able to get a WOW EDR? Do you have another Macquarie card? I have a WOW EDR and Jetstar card. I applied for other HSBC and Macq cards and got refused. I wonder if you can't have two cards from each bank?

It's a thought. They may be different to Citibank who has given me three cards (NOT including a Diners and attached MC) and Amex two. I used to think I didn't have a HSBC one until the yearly fee came and I found an old card at the bottom of the drawer, now being used to get a proper HSBC profile :)
I am pretty sure I don't have a Macquarie one.

In my latest attempt for WOW EDR I changed my status from self employed to employee (I can make a case for either or both) but that didn't help :(

So I'm not sure what the problem is...sniff. And Mrs N is sick of getting more cards, although she was rather pleased about the business upgrades to and from LAX recently. But I might sneak an application in for her for the Jet* one. It's how I got around the WOW EDR problem.

Also I must be patient and let more time pass before I apply again

I may have also temporarily burned my bridges with the CC companies by applying for too many cards too quickly. I have good income, and lots of cards but with a reasonably low combined limit. I just think I applied for too many too quickly in search of bonus points. Once one card application was rejected the next ones seemed to follow suit. Of course none of the call centre staff would tell me why except one from Amex who said my Veda score may have been too high due to a number of applications. She said I should wait six months for my score to "settle down" and try again. I've applied for my Veda file to see what it says and ill try again in six months. Has anyone had similar experiences?
