Here's something interesting!

Just checked the MPM for MEL-GUM using KVS and it is dramatically lower than it used to be!

[KVS Availability Tool 7.3.6 - Reference: Maximum Permitted Mileage [MPM]: MEL-GUM/US]
Code:
         GI M 5M 10M 15M 20M 25M
MPM EH 4263 4476 4689 4902 5115 [B]5328[/B]

The 25M number used to be in the high 7k's or low 8k's.

Something like MEL-HKG-NRT-GUM is now massively over 25M.

The most basic routing: SYD-NRT-GUM is over by about 2500 miles.

This is what I am thinking:

MEL-SYD QF J
SYD-SIN BA F
SIN-HKG CX F
HKG-NRT JL F
NRT-GUM JL J
GUM-NRT JL J
NRT-SIN JL F
SIN-SYD BA F
SYD-MEL QF J

I don't even know if JL and/or CX have F on some of those routes but that would be a dream GUM itinerary for me :)

Just spent an hour on the phone to USDm. We managed to find 2 seats on the08th Dec PER-HKG-LHR in J, which I have on hold, but nothing returning on the 04th Jan 2015. We tried out of LHR, out of DUB via the USA which she said we couldn't do as it would involve connections on *S, we tried 04th, 05th, 06th of Jan, we tried out of Paris, Frankfurt and all UK cities, no joy.

So I'm cough out of luck…

God talk about reaching for the stars!!!

if you can pull off MEL-HKG-NRT-GUM-NRT-HKG-MEL all in J with some F here and there then I'd consider yourself a lucky man

Next you'll be saying our stopover has to be at a OW hub flying that hub's home carrier! ;)
Well speaking of hub's thought I'd post this as no doubt people may be interested in where the hubs are now for stopovers. HT to one mile at a time of course but why do the work when others are prepared to help out.

US Airways Award Stopover Rules And OneWorld Hubs - One Mile at a Time

Yes, I know the rules aren't always applied (or maybe never) but good to know anyway if you do get a difficult agent!

Sorry to hear that, it was certainly suggested that redemptions may be harder on OW, seems that may be true!

To be fair *A redemption has also typically been very tight ex Europe in the first week of January.

I have the PER-HKG-LHR on hold, I'll call again tomorrow and see how I go out till the 09th of Jan.

I'm seeing 2x seats in J on the 6th on January LHR-HKG CX252

then on the 7th you will have to go HKG-KUL CX791 followed by KUL-PER MH125

all flights have 2 seats in J

Holy cough, I'll call them now!

it's a long lay over in HKG but i'm sure that isn't a big problem for you the LHR-HKG leg has 2 seats in F if you want to pay the extra points, maybe they have 2 in F for your HKG-LHR leg

On the phone to them now, they cannot see the MH125 KUL-PER flight….. Its Saying invalid flight!

No joy. They could get us from LHR-DOH-HKG or LHR-HKG-KUL but thats it. They were not able to see any award bookings at all on MH, she suggested it might not be fully loaded as of yet… Bummer

Thats what I'm hoping, ill call again tomorrow. Not giving up yet. Not about to miss my baby sisters wedding….

oh… it's probably their system isn't working 100% just yet

what a pain!

Holy cough, I'll call them now!
Besides, you should consider flying out of another OneWorld hub - HEL immediately comes to my mind and I can see availability in early January on the AA site
You can also try Berlin or Duesseldorf, Madrid and Barcelona
