Awesome!
Which MEL-HKG flight did you get?
174/134/104?
I was looking at CX J out of Australia and from my initial searches, it seems the night flights are harder for award availability...

The 134, quick 1:15 connection and onto the 840 to JFK.

Yea I found the night flights were much less. And heaps(!!!) of phantom QF website availability for CX.

There is a CX flight out of ADL early morn, so an overnight would be order of the day.

After an utterly ridiculous number of hours searching availability, I had to decide to forgo the US (specifically NYC) as I didn't want to get raped by BA YQ or vastly change flights to compensate the additional distance to route via alternate airports to use AA instead (for the TATL flights).

In the end, I have the below on hold pending MH confirming it's flight before I ticket the whole lot (the lovely British girl from the Euro call centre advised me of this). Record length call of under 19 minutes including IVR and on hold time. Brilliant!

MEL-ADL QF J
ADL-HKG-ZRH CX J/F
ZRH-LHR BA J
...
Eurostar to PAR and revenue flights ORY-NCE-ZRH
...
ZRH-HKG-KUL CX F/J
KUL-MEL MH J
Should be 150K + taxes and fees

All in all, 7 nights in London, 4 nights in Nice, 6 nights in Paris and 1 night in Zurich encompassing the last 3 weeks of July (die winter, die!)

I wish you the best of luck... there are several reports of MH not confirming flights in these situations (ie where they're not instantly confirmed). They often come back unavailable.

that's good news! and a good data point.
I've just been told that the other passenger (who has the same itinerary except KUL-syd-MEL on the way back) is only 75K miles (not 150K). Then she muttered, "that's not right, please wait on hold while I double check..."

Just curious, how long did that take you to book??

yea i didn't rate Saipan at all, run down and over priced. I would of tried to get away with one night but that could of sparked some questioning

One call, about 40 minutes on Skype. I had to cancel the same trip that was booked for March/April this year and rebook after getting the miles reimbursed

That is most likely why it was so easy, because I had booked the original trip in May 2014 when things were a bit easier

That does seem unusually high. No carriers there with fuel surcharges that I am aware of, and the airports traversed don't charge that much. Will be interesting to see the fare breakdown once you get the e-tickets.

The bulk of this (>$600) appears to be US Transportation Tax.
Called and got the rate desk to re-do it. The calculations came back at the original ~700 but I told them to look at the individual fare construction because I couldn't get anywhere near that using ITA Matrix or even buying commercial fares on any airline.

Big apology and a $635 refund coming to me.
Total taxes down to $57.

That sounds better.

"US Transportation Tax"? Yeah... did you know that "fat chance" and "thin chance" mean the same thing and all that jazz.....

just booked and posted in other USDM forum

SENSATIONALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!
Just booked ADL (CX) -HKG (CX) -NRT (JL)-GUM(JL)(1 night)-NRT(12days stopover). HND (QF)-SYD (QF) - ADL in December

Bloody unbelievable call as well - must be super lucky - took 30 minutes from start to end
Almost going to hang up initially because it took so long to connect
Agent answered - no problems with finding each flight first time (didn't even ask me "Ade-what?")
Got to the end and read me back all my flights ("are you sure you only want 1 day in GUM?" - yes)
Agent: "here's your confirmation numbers - would you like to ticket now?"
"yes please absolutely"
takes all details
totally expected her to say "i'm going to place you on hold ........"
she DID NOT SAY THAT...
went right ahead to confirm all my flights and receipt is now in my mailbox

only weird thing is she initially said "30,000 miles" but got to the end and said "actually it's 45,000 miles"
i didn't even bother trying to correct her - didn't want her to go checking... so just paid.

all in all. 30mins from start to end.
paid 45,000 per person and USD215 in taxes.

after 11 calls this is awesome. definitely not as good as appaz and his recent 30,000 miles and 185 USD but i'll take it.

Excellent bloody work.

been trying to book something similar for 3 weeks.
11 calls and no luck.

How many calls did you make and did they go to the rates desk?
