I did. My plan B was to get the HKG-SFO only in J for 90k until they jacked it up!

Definitely. For the reasons already mentioned.

The other week when I was trying to book CX using AA miles, CX, BA and QF were all showing 2 seats in J. AA could see none, JL could see none.

In that example, could AA make the booking when BA and / or QF is showing some seats ?

Or, don't bother call AA until you could see some on AA itself ?

I had ignored CX availability for this Q.

Thanks

How could AA make the booking if they 'could see none'. And you have to call as AA doesn't show CX availability online.

The missing link in my story is that I ended up booking about 60 hours before departure when suddenly AA could see something (and BA had gone from showing CS2 to CS5) but I could not check what JAL showed at this point as they lock you out after T-4 til departure date.

not very exciting, but saved plenty booking using miles bought at share rates than direct
SYD-ABQ
AUS-SYD
80,000 + $175 taxes/fees

compared to a $2,000 Y direct with AA or QF it was a no brainer.

tried using the US Airways site to check internal USA award availability - i think maybe there has to be availability in the "low" bucket, as none of the internal flights we suggested showed as available to the agent.

This looks good ... would you tell what sort of stopovers/ long transits you have on that. Which month and which site to find availability? Cheers

Just booked 2 x J redemptions for my brother and his GF for July!

SYD-DFW (QF J)
DFW-EWR (AA J)

YYZ-LHR (BA J)
LHR-KUL (MH J)
KUL-MEL (MH J)
MEL-SYD (QF J)

Was quite difficult finding flights to/from USA for July. Going through LHR isn't ideal, but for ease of travel, its what we ended up with.

Total cost:

120 000 points + $565 each

Well done! What sites did you use to look for availability if you don't mind to share?

interesting. Most people have been saying that US is failing to pass on BA's YQ. But either you have paid it or they've mistakenly charged you UK APD (which they have been known to do).

We really need a sticky or something for this question.

So were you charged the Europe rate then, because isnt US supposed to be 110,000pts?

Technically the price of the award is supposed to be equal to the highest zone which is traversed. In this case, even if the US is the "destination" (and we can argue forever and a day which should be which), Europe is traversed and is more expensive, so technically the price is correct.

People have gotten away with less (especially in one particular case) mainly thanks to US DM agents manually pricing awards.

Yes I think so. To be honest, I was just happy to get the booking over and done with as it was a real pain to ticket. I phoned 4 different operators who gave me different reasons to why they couldn't ticket it. The last one was very good and helpful, so I just agreed to everything! I was tempted to do a YYZ-LHR-CDG then CDG-KUL to save the ADP, but another flight would have just added more inconvenience to the holiday for my brother and his GF.

Ahhh, that makes sense.

Sure. I tried using Award Nexus, but it wasn't very helpful for me.

I mainly used:

QF website for Cathay
AA website for American, Qantas and British
MH website for Malaysian

If I want to go to USA

SYD/MEL/BNE - LAX/DFW
HKG - ORD/LAX/SFO/JFK
LHR - JFK

Then its all about connecting the dots. Its very time consuming through!

It is supposed to be the highest zone that is your destination or have a stopover. If you are merely in transit back through europe then the USA rate would apply.

Assuming that you are simply transiting LHR (<24 hrs) APD is not due anyway. So as I said before, it's either been charged by mistake or you have paid the fuel surcharge for the BA sector...which would be correct, but doesn't match with what many others have been experiencing.

I think someone suggested you could plug your ticket details into the QR website to get a taxes/fees breakdown?

First half of September. Had a stopover in HKG. I used combination of JL, CX and QF engine.

Looked but failed to find anything leaving from HKG, or on (my preferred) CX.

Could have done AKL HKG PVG MXP on CA (still good until May, I think) but would require SYD AKL rtn.

Now, do I need to bring my own EPIRB ?

Hi guys,

I decided to significantly change my holiday plans with the wife for January next year. Decided to cancel our trip to Dubai and Hong Kong and change it to a 3 week USA trip!

PER-HKG (CX Y)
HKG-JFK (CX F)
LAX-HKG (CX F)
HKG-PER (CX J)

Total was 280 000 points + $250 taxes and fees

I had to pay $300US to cancel and rebook the new itinerary, but I gained 20 000 points from changing my itinerary from AUS-MIDDLE EAST, to AUS-USA. I'm hoping some J seats open up from the PER-HKG flight in the next few months.

I'm finding US can't see all the OW award seats. I've called numerous times and they just cannot see CX or MH flights that I can see on BA/QF etc. I wonder if US is purposely blocking seats, or their IT has integrated with OW partners properly yet!?
