US election 2020

Yes agree, anything not far right of centre now is called radical socialist left and is therefore bordering on communism.
It’s pretty unbelievable that so many people can be so simply impressionable.

Ah yes, the old "you have to be (stupid, deplorable, or insert put-down of the day, here) to vote for (Trump or insert right-of-centre figure or issue here). I love it. When made publicly by someone in the campaign environment, always ups the votes for the deplorable figure/issue (thinks wistfully back to the Republican referendum here)

My comment is that people are impressionable. If you wish to dispute that go right ahead but what you have written is not what I said. You have made an assumption which is incorrect.

Does anyone else get a sense that things are swinging towards Trump? Horrible thought.....
Maybe I’m just cynical! These conventions are ‘big news’ and the media like to hype them up but I’m far from convinced that (on both sides) they are anything more than just preaching to the converted who of course are great supporters. But not sure that they win many new supporters.

Sure Donald will be happy his supporters still love him but that’s not what he needs to win the election.

I actually do not think that Donald wants to win the next election. He is not, at heart, a politician. I think he ran for the presidency as an egotistical thing, something, a goal, that was different from everything he had already done. I feel, from all his recent stuff, that he is sick of the game. But due to his ego, he does not want to "lose" in a normal sense. I think he is cunningly working things so that he will lose, but only just, and that he can claim forever after that the result was invalid.

You are probably close to the mark. In the White House he is subject to scrutiny every day and, at least of late, he is not getting away with many of the lies without flags being raised on social media.

I posted earlier that I felt he was showing signs of increasing stress levels as his ego tells him he always has to win, but he doesn't like the job as his ego is being regularly bruised and being lampooned. He and his family are enjoying benefiting from milking the position and status for all its worth but are probably realising the game will soon be up.

In private life and business he can surround himself with positive feedback from employees and those seeking favours and can he can cover up his mistakes with bankruptcies and legal suits. He can't sue his way out of the pandemic and lives lost by accusing detractors of libel etc. It is being more and more obvious he has lost his previously biggest leg-up (Fox News organisation) and social media are now moving to tone down his most ridiculous conspiracy assertions.

I expect he will seriously up the ante on "the election is rigged" lie over the next few months as a cover if he does lose.

There were earlier rumours of an impending "divorce" with Fox as he subtly realigned himself with another network that he is negotiating a TV series with. I have no idea if that is true or not.

OK, my assumption may have been incorrect, but I think you wrote that people forming a certain view are impressionable; as in, other folks are not and have formed their independent view.

There is a phenomena where supporters of (in general) 'conservative' issues/candidates being portrayed as uneducated, or 'deplorable', or weak minded etc by their issue/political opponents. That is, there must be something intellectually lacking in them, compared to the writer, to be a supporter of such issues/candidates. Not allowing that perhaps they too are quite smart enough but happen to have formed a different view. There's a few examples in this thread.

As I wrote, I love this, as people who are in the middle, those who can see the merits of both side, are put off by being called or implied to be stupid or bad etc and settle on the other side.

And there is also a phenomena where supporter of (in general) 'left leaning' issues/candidates being portrayed as crazy, or loony. Is that bad as well? What's worse to insult one's intelligence or to insult one's sanity?

Mentioning the word "deplorable" was probably the low watermark though. Ironically though, there are lots of insults thrown in the other direction and none of them seem to hit the raw nerve that the specific word "deplorable" did.

And so the Trump reality show just continues. Or maybe an old fashioned circus. It does not seem to matter what he says or does, enough people just love his politics and outrageous personality that he is likely to breeze to another four years, thanks to the Electoral College.

I disagree, he wants to win as he can't face not winning. But I don't think he cares much for being president which I guess is pretty obvious by his actions.

He might not care that much for being president but his backers (whoever they are, depending on which conspiracy theory you want to believe) I am sure do care that he stays in office.

And, the Republicans Who Have Endorsed Joe Biden For President, incl Rep mayors and senators etc etc:

TIt really doesn’t represent anything much quoting the sort of facts and figures though.

From the sound of the stories from the Apprentice reality TV show, he turned up only for his scene, was told who was up for the high jump, and then uttered those words of fame;

“you’re fired”

People love it, Public shaming - the Metaphorical gulliotine
Why?
IMHO cause there’s plenty of times in their own life where they wish they had the power to fire the deadwood boss, or family memember or .... name someone who gets up their goat. Seeing it actually done is a bit like Biggles shooting down the German Messerschmidt ....

Perhaps VP Biden is the Comedian America needs to have to matchup with Ukraine’s elected President who happened to be a comedian who played the role of President in a TV series before being overwhelmingly voted in.... highly appropriate seeing the belief of the naughty Hunter who extracted untold riches out of Ukraine....

Hero worship (and never mind what other terrible things or eccentricities are done behind closed doors, we don’t care)

The more I think about the more I think Trump is going to win. Trump stands for nothing, except himself and his view of what he has done and what he can do. He is not constained by the truth, but importantly he is not beholden to a particular dogma (other than the Dogma of Trump himself).

Meanwhile Democrats are too busy trying to not upset the African Americans that they need to be motivated enough to turn up and vote - but in doing so risk losing other necessary groups in the swing states. In other words the whole BLM movement and the associated opportunists who are rioting and looting, coupled with the ridicilous cancel culture that even some on the so called "loony left" have decried, will effectively hand Trump the election. That's the trouble with all these social media fuelled do good movements - all tactics, no strategy.

I agree, Trump has no morals and will continue to steal, lie and cheat for as long as possible. He cares nothing for anything except himself and money.

It would be an appropriate end to the horrid events of 2020 and their continuation for another four years. Life in lock down Melbourne will be a dream compared to what the people of the USA are in for when Trump is reelected.

The courts will continue to be filled with fundamentalist right wing supporters of Trump/Pence who, with their lifetime appointments will see their vision of Gilead, aka the Divine Republic, come to fruition.

Apparently, the rule of thumb is if 20% of African Americans vote for Trump, Trump wins....

That’s 20% of 12.2% , yes 87.8% of Americans are another ethnicity....
So if 2.4% vote with Trump, and why would they not if they are part of the entrepreneurial class, then he wins.

The state by state ethnic demographics I have noted before and these line up a Trump victory, like they did in 2016

It’s very unhelpful of the protestors on both camps to conduct open civil war between supporters, yet protesting in Portland & Seattle against Democratic Mayors suggests the Dems have perpetuated the wrongs which aggrieve BLM PROTESTORS and have failed to do anything about it. Blaming Trump is like blaming Morrison for the Victorian failures where the local logistics are directly under the Victorian Government..... and yes, fanning the flames is a particularly right wing tactic best combatted by Democratic Mayors actually righting the wrongs, which they haven’t - it’s easy enough to extinguish the flames if you strategically set up operations to do it. But they didn’t

Biden his time isn’t going to do that either, hence why law and order works well in the minds of law abiding citizens
