I'm heading to NZ soon and seeing a good deal for MEL-AKL about 1-2 months in advance. With promo code PRW59 I'm seeing MEL-AKL for $480 (cheaper than Y on some flights!!), and AKL-MEL for $417. That'll earn 80SC each way, 160 round trip, 320 with double SC offer. All up about $2.80 per SC.

Route via Brisbane for better value:
MEL-BNE-AKL for $502 and earning (60 + 80) x2 = 280 SC
AKL-BNE-MEL for $438 and 280 SC.
$940 for 560SC is $1.68 per SC.

edit: these are business saver fares

Yes I flew the exact same routing over Easter last year and requalified for Gold with 400 status credits (and 4 eligible sectors) from a single status run....

When I search on Google flights for same day return and click through to VA it's pricing it but without promo code, when I do it on VA website manually with promo code and same day return, it says not eligible because of same day return or something along that lines. Anyone done this before for same day turn around? Any issues with customs or no need to go through customs in AKL?

Does anyone know if rewards seats booked as Any Seat rewards are eligible for double SC? I know they usually earn the regular points and status credits, but wasn't sure if they classify as rewards seats for the promo.

I have plenty of points to burn, and need 150SC by December to keep my gold, so thought it could be a way to get plan a few 'free' weekends away up until the end of the year.

I would expect the answer is yes as they convert "Any Seat rewards" to cash. IE if you cancel them, you get a cash refund not a point refund.
Also you would earn SC's on the ticket ... So they are just a form of payment.

Any experiences with family pooling and double status credits? Does the double stay with the original person or do they get pooled? Or nothing?

It would be safe to assume that, provided the pax has activated the offer, SC's would pool.

Hi, I’m a newbie. Do you book it as ‘multi trip’? Reason is I’m not getting the prices for via BNE. Thanks.

Hey @KathN, you don't have to book a "multi city" trip. Just enter MEL, AKL and dates. You'll be shown different options.

Initially I was going to fly with Delta to JFK but I'm looking at some flights with VA. I can do SYD - MEL - LAX - JFK in business and the return leg in the reverse order but this time economy. The flights are all VA planes except for the US domestic leg of course. As I'm purchasing tickets for both myself and my brother I assume I'd get the double status credits for the domestic flights even if they're connecting with long haul flights? I have already activated the promo in my brothers account as he pools points and credits to me. Also slightly off topic but why is it I can't book a mixture of SYD to LAX in business and then the return leg in economy on the VA website but can do with no problems on the app?

As long as the flights are marketed and operated by VA and are not flown to/from HKG or LA, you'll get DSC. And with your brother crediting his points and SC's into your VA, you'd get his DSC too

Thank you! I just booked for March 2020 ^_^

Question. If I book a J fare using the promo code am I still eligible for the DSC's? Just had a look at the T&C's of the DSC offer and a bit confused when it says that 'this offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer' - does that include using a promo code to get reduced fares?

You can still use the promo code just fine

Are you aware of something which hasn’t been announced on the ASX?

As at 31st December 2018, they had over $1.2 billion in cash or cash equivalent AND reports their assets cover all their liabilities (plus extra): https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20190213/pdf/442kt5555fq863.pdf
They have refinanced some notes, which is pretty standard to do: https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20190226/pdf/442zrbgsz5mrff.pdf

I’m far from a finance expert however life experiences have taught me that the headline profit and loss announcements tend to be somewhat misleading.
If a company is cash positive (It’s outgoings is less than it’s incomings) is definitely what needs to be understood as a key factor along with many a belief “cash is king”.

Don’t get me wrong there are genuine issues affecting Virgin and other airlines, the cost of fuel is rising (the majority is probably hedged) and the AUD to USD (in which a lot of payments are made for airlines for fuel and aircraft leasing) exchange rate is dropping. A 1cent drop in the Exchange Rate could be $10,000’s AUD more. Also airfares are still cheap.

(As one, very simple example)If Virgin the accounting department and auditors agree that a B737 aircraft was worth $1million last year, but due to the declining aircraft 2nd hand market it’s now worth $0.5 million, but that’s not one but ten aircraft that’s a $50 million wiped off the profit BUT the reality is the aircraft aren’t actually sold. The company hasn’t lost $50 million its just adjusted the value of its assets. Next year the market conditions have improved as one aircraft is now $1milion .... Wow headline ASX announcement of profits.....

Rule of thumb, read the P&L as part of the accounts and then read the ASX release. (It’s possible that companies have a massive headline profit, but are asset rich and cash poor, the assets and products are worth nothing until sold.)

If a company says it has made a $100 million profit, if you look at the previous corresponding P&L’s the company’s assets (cash) may not have increased by $100 million and it’s possible the assets are worth less.

It’s probably more a gut feel to the never ending stream of bad news coming out from VA which makes me nervous maybe less so about their future, probably more so what that future looks like for us air warriors :(

Ok will try, thanks

Hello, can I ask one last favour to check the SC as I’m on the verge of booking, and don’t want to fall short.

Looking at MEL-SYD-AKL and AKL-MEL on Bus Saver. I think this is 40+80, +80 and then double to get 400. Is this right? Thanks in advance.

Hey @KathN , as per the status table and distance flown, it works out to 50 for MEL-SYD, 80 for trans-tasman * 2, So I'd say it's 50+80+80 = 210, so 420 DSC

Arriving into AKL at 2am and flying out at 6.30am I PRAY there is some lounge to use there in wee hours, now that Virgin and not buddies with Air NZ? ? Anyone know the score there?

I understand the lounge is not open until 5am and closed when you arrive. I have virtually the same flights booked arrive 1.30am depart 7.30am and had the same query. Arrival and Departure times are the draw back with nothing open. Novotel right outside of terminal maybe for a few hours but would cost a night rate.

IBIS budget Auckland Airport has 24-hour reception and will be about half the price of the Novotel, but still cost $120-130. It's a 10-15 minute walk and good for stretching your legs, but would suck if it's raining. Otherwise taxi/uber or the $6 shuttle.

Also this might help: Auckland Airport Guide

If you clear customs then you might have trouble getting back in airside because check in will be closed until the morning.

The problem landside is there isn't much seating, by design. They want you to keep moving through the area, not loiter :)
