Vinomofo Wine Deals

I think that wine in itself is such a subjective thing that is open to influence from so many sources. I've had wine that I can't stand to drink yet others think is amazing, I've also had wine which I thought was a cracker and others thought was disgusting - varying prices too. I think how you perceive a wine can be influenced by things such as price, rating, friends and family opinion, glass type etc, food and even mood. Some days a shiraz just doesn't hit the spot compared to a pinot, no matter the rating/price.

One of my favourite wines is a el-cheapo Whitebox Heathcote Shiraz from 2010 which goes for about $15 a pop - love it every time I've drunk it and I've even preferred it to more expensive ($30-40) bottles. I don't know it's rating but I love it and would happily drink it anytime!

I'd like to know why you lot are tucking into glasses so early in the day, while I sit at my desk "pretending" to answer emails at work. Big pang of jealousy going on right now;)

Do you guys think the VIM which just came through is actually a reasonable deal?

It's $45 at CD, and I haven't seen it cheaper than that elsewhere?

I guess it appeals to me as I was actually thinking about buying some more GS wines recently.

Its not bad. Im intrigued that they werent offering it at their recent sale.... Usual price is $50-55 when current.

And now for something unrelated, is anyone going to the Coffee and Wine night in Melbourne tomorrow?

I should be there assuming my flight is on time.

I've seen VIM mentioned a few times, what is this?

Very Important mof_ - They have some deals which are only emailed out to a limited set of "regular" customers.

The criteria are not published, but rumours here and elsewhere suggest it is about $1K of spend.

The comment by GT Goodes (5299) raises an interesting point - just which wine critic should you follow - I personally have found plenty of wines where I have disagreed with Halliday. Both cheap and expensive wines. Eg Remember a Pinot from WA which Halliday gave good wraps on but which I found terrible.( made the mistake of not sending it back - was early days ). I found the guys at the Wine Font to be better for me to assess whether I would like the wine or not. What do others think ?

I don't necessarily "follow" anyone in particular. I respect Halliday's opinion given how involved and dedicated he seems to be to the industry as a whole. His descriptions are usually pretty good and I particularly like his ability to convey the structure of the wine. Of course I completely agree with you and @tango - It's all subjective. There's a few St Hubert Pinots I'd happily take over a basket press Rockford any day of the week and they're a 1/4 the price.

I seemed to hit the very important 'Very Important mof_' (aka VIM) status pretty quick, and I am sure many others did too.

I am tempted by the VIM Deal (they haven't been wowser for a while), but am only lukewarm on this one. Is it past its prime for a chardy (depends on its quality)? It's not discounted that much, which gives me some comfort there isn't a fault.

Mmm... I think I will post to the Share a Case thread to see if somebody in Sydney wants to go halves on this one ...

I have tasted this at cellar door and it is an excellent wine. It should cellar for 10 years, so no concern regarding vintage.

The discount isn't much, but it is enough to tempt me given I was looking at getting some of their wines anyway (was initially thinking a mixed case, but will see how I go with this).

Nothing special.

You said it, Dr Raplh in two words! Still happy to try a good chardy but not interested in all 6, hence seeking a purchasing partner in crime on the other thread. Probably because I have a very red-biased palate, so it takes a lot to get my credit card out for a white - especially a premium white above 40 bad boys.

And am I being too soft after a few Fiji coughtails and the last glasses of my Fiji contraband - the Robert Bowen Cab Sauv 12. What a great wine (polished off in two nights, which is fast for me!).

+1
It's a really great drop.
I'm in :D

Just wondering about these "new" wines. Maybe it's another take on VinoMofo collaboration wines.
In this case the winemaker specifically make wines for VinoMofo but using the winemaker's label eg Haselgrove Batch 187, 8 Uncles Tempranillo.
These wines will not be listed/sold in their web sites. Just a thought after a glass of excellent Dolan Langhorne Creek shiraz.

sieber estate a while ago made wine specifically for the fo.

I remember winestate bought the whole vintage of one of my all time favourites, a West Oz Forester coughook 2009 cab merlot. stunning stuff. You wont find it on their website.
Look it's all a business. Home brand coles food or cleaning products, aldi cheap plonk at $2.49 which isn't that bad.
It only costs upto eight bucks a bot to make seriously good stuff so it really shouldn't matter where or how they make it.
It really doesn't faze me, but who doesn't feel great buying a normal forty bucker for a tenner?

well what a coincidence Tango. I returned a whitebox shiraz 2012 or whatever the recent one was to dannys, swapped it for my first ever Tassie pinot and had a smile all over. firstly because the pinot was damn good for $26 and secondly I got the full $16.20 refund. I found it totally underwhelming when you consider VM shirazes at under twelve. Tango, it could have been the year also as we all know. They certainly vary, but once again, individual tastes.
