I've had 6 of my Quorums. Wasn't convinced at first so was drinking to get rid of them, but have come around to think it's actually quite nice. It's cork so store properly. Had one or the Giant Squid Ink - thought it had a bit of a bitter aftertaste, but I also had a bit of a cold so I'll crack another before rushing to judgement- otherwise the flavours were good: not too much fruit, good tannins.

Don't have the other two, but did drink a 2005 Hewitson Private Cellar Shiraz Mouvedre on the weekend. Nice and smooth- good drinking now.

AC, just re-read your excellent post - makes me think you live in the vino equivalent of Seat 1A! That's some serious wines (at least by Fo standards anyway). Please do let us know if you have a post-cold revelation on the Giant Squid...

Cracked a Devils Lair Chardonnay tonight, initial impression quite favourable.

On another colour , have been quite disappointed with this years Lagrein, drinks best after 3 days …..

Wozza, I will post a pic later that may differentiate the bedrooms of our wives present compared to our girlfriends past. My wife said this is the norm these days. However, back onto more
important items. I had only the one out of sixer Quorum 2010 Shiraz in early June and remember that it was a heavy wine that was very nice now but really needed to rest a bit. It had no nastiness to it at all which was good, but it was really full on with no attributes at this stage that really jumped at me. I remember thinking it was money well spent on an unknown.

I too had the same thought about you AC. Some serious products find their way past your taste buds. Out of interest, no whites there. I take you as an old fashioned wooded, heavier, buttery chardy man?

Anybody tried any of the following yet:

1. Quorum Shiraz 10

2. Hewitson Private Cellar Shiraz Blend Magnum 10

3. Tier 1 Barossa Shiraz 08

4. Giant Quid Ink

The [first 3] are in the Pool Room aka the top shelf of the wine cabinet at the moment, ready to try one (from their 6 packs, with the rest already tucked away under the house). I have not tried the fourth, the Giant Squid (what a cool name), but I am tempted to buy the Boom Box or a 6 pack if you good guys tell me it's a gud'un having tried it.

I picked up that boom box and some of the wines look a tad different to recent offerings. But the squid really was the deal breaker. How does a bargain hunter get to taste a hundred bucker? Really, thanks to VM, I can and it has to sit for a special occasion.

As a last one for a couple of days at least, I just had to add that in recent days, I have been reading another aff forum, that about punters enjoying nice wines. There are a couple of lads travelling the world at the moment that really put new meaning into 'having an unbelievable time". The food, the wine, and the photos are just sublime. JohnM which I know some of you know is phenomenal. fancy eating at two of the best Edinburgh restaurants drinking the stuff that would probably made AC blush - then again, maybe not !...I reckon he;s earned it though so good luck. Great travel reporting at nice wines I have tried....do yourselves a favour.....go hawks. oh yes, mention today in the herald sun of a few punters who put some serious money on the hawks. the 5grand straight on the nose at $1.60 was someone I know. He flashed the TAB ticket to me on Wednesday and I felt a little funny...why show it? ...yes I know people are different.....and what if the eagles win? My oh my..enjoy both the nrl and afl folks.

Beefarmer, you are seriously too funny. A good friend of mine is an amazing professional comedian (I won't mention names) - but I should put you in touch.

I should have known that wives and girlfriends comment on the DM thread would come back and bite me!

Anyway, interesting contrast in experiences on the Quorum 10 described above. Your experience seems more in keeping with the Fo description, which was suggesting a Harold Bishop (from Neighbours) kind of play - pretend to kill it off, only to bring it back many years later for the big encore!

I've bought a few whites from VM: Shaw Riesling, Jaluka Chardonnay, Stefani The View, Willoughby Park from memory. But I find I'm buying most of my whites elsewhere. I drink mostly red (and Scotch whiskey) and the missus is a champagne fan so our red/white buying ratio (excluding bubbles and desert wine) is something like 10:1. I moved back from Singapore a few years ago so rebuilding the wine stash seems to involve buying a bunch of red I can keep for a few years. The earlier DM cellar sale was great for getting a bunch of back vintages in one go.

Please donr larf at me but have you tried Aldi's highland mist if that's its title, about $27 a bot?
I tried it alongside an Aberlour...it smashed the Ab.
Odd win. But very smooth.

not much talk about the fox Gordon cabernet 2014.....I know its a new one but considering pedigree, why was there not much excitement?
Is is to do with the fact that like the new tempranillo, no one knows what to expect?
You can always send them back. The description, once again is waxing lyrically about super premium, full bodied.
I like my wines like I like my art - very michelangeloan compared to picassan. You get more paint on the canvas with bigger bodies, and only one head.
Back to the cab - under $11 for a foxy?

I agree. It should be a no-brainer for all the reasons you mention. And I too must confess to preferring the fair ladies with just one head too, Beefarmer!!

Anyway, back to the wine. I had one of the Parker First Growth 08s tonight. Nice wine. But it did leave me thinking like, well, a little underwhelmed.

I gave it 4 Vivino stars and said:

Silky smooth, lovely fruits, but not a $110 experience. It's very nice, but not sensational (as I was probably hoping).

From memory the Parker First Growth is a 10+ year cellaring exercise for the better vintages. Since you have another 11 bottles, maybe drink one a year and see if there's much change over the next 11 years. I haven't tapped my 08's yet, but even if it's not a great vintage, I reckon it'll still be good value for the price paid (just based on prior year's tastings).

Since you have another 11 bottles, maybe drink one a year and see if there's much change over the next 11 years. I haven't tapped my 08's yet, but even if it's not a great vintage, I reckon it'll still be good value for the price paid (just based on prior year's tastings).

We've only ever had 3 bottles of this wine - Vintage 2000, which was not supposedly one of the "great" years. Had the first one in around 2011 and it was drinking so superbly (and was so ready) that we drank the remaining two over the following 12 months. Concentrated and complex, rich blackberry with soft tannins, a very slightly savoury backdrop and a looooong finish - everything that good Coonawarra is known for. It was under cork, so maybe a little quicker to mature than screwcap, and our cellar conditions would amplify that (pretty constant over any given 24 hour period, but varies between 14 to 22 winter to summer).

Given 2008 is likely to produce some very long lived wines, and the screwcap factor, I wouldn't have thought there would be any hurry to get stuck in to the 2008s. Should blossom into a wonderful wine. I'm only jealous that we don't have any...

That said, a friend of ours says that the Wynns Black Label from 2008 is drinking well right now. I would have thought it would still be pretty robust too. Guess I had better try one...

Great advice, AC. I think you are right. I think I may have been a bit Parkered (I went a bit fast and loose with this one, which is very unusual for me).

I could see the potential, and as I now read the JkandBr post below, I think that description is very close to what I was picking up in this 08. At $55 and $44 a bottle (delivered), I think I will be pleasantly surprised in years to come and it may become one of those bargain buys.

When I went bargain hunting at my local BWS following a tip off from the DM thread there was some seriously cheap Ata Rangi 13 going, I did spot the 08s going for $55 a bottle. So you may not be too late to pick some up.
