Thanks, appreciate your comments. I guess what I'm getting at is that I didn't hate it, but didn't love it. So if someone with more wine experience said "it'll be amazing in 8 years", I'd probably look to keep it as the aging process is still a bit of a mystery to me! :)
 
Cracked a Claymore Bittersweet last night and was a little underwhelmed. We usually think the Halliday special value wines are pretty good, but this one tasted a bit blah (thin maybe?!) and I'm just not sure about it compared to some of the others we've ordered recently.

I'm sort of considering returning the case and looking to get more of one of the recent purchases we've really enjoyed. We've been drinking the Maverick Shiraz and Cab and enjoying them both recently, and the Pertaringa Over the Top is provably our favourite buy so far.

Would be interested to hear if anyone agrees or if best to just not trust my uncultured palate!

I agree that it could be considered a bit thin, especially if Pertaringa Over The Top is what floats your boat. (And I don't mean that in any perjorative way. They are just very different wines.) I think the Claymore is a good wine for the money if you like the style. I personally wasn't lining up for more but I wouldn't have sent it back. But life's too short to have to tough it out through a whole case of wine you don't like.

It is always best to trust your own personal preferences.

Bittersweet is a dreadful name for a cabernet-based red wine, you never want one that is bitter and sweet.

I know what you mean, but I do respect them for naming their wines after songs. That's not a great marketing move, but it displays personality and passion.

I my opinion it's an early drinker. It might become a little softer, a little more complex, but not really less 'thin'. If you don't like it now for that reason, don't put it down and resent it taking up space, because unless your tastes change you're not going to be bowled over. (Of course, many people's tastes do change, but that's another story...)

If this is the 2014, Halliday rated it 95pts and drink to 2030.

I haven't tried it so don't have a personal opinion, but in lengthy experience, the wines that cellar best impress with their power and balance as young wines.
Some "thin" wines put on weight in the cellar, many don't.
There are so many wines on offer that do impress young and will cellar, I wouldn't bother with one you don't really like when young, despite famous critic opinions.

I found it quite good, needs a bit of air though.
 
Another vote for the Maverick Twins 2015 shiraz. For a young wine, it's pretty good. At <$10 a bottle, even better.
 
G'day Rkt - it was in a LaBoeuf (Spelling?) dozen purchased 09/09/16, W&D and I got same, been comparing our thoughts on bottles.

Also has a Maverick Ahrens Creek 2014 Shiraz which we are looking fwd to. :)

After the La Boeuf landed we had the Cellarmasters free-for-all which resulted in so much red wine sloshing around the place I haven't returned to its contents! Not that there weren't some quite toothsome quaffers among them, like you I'm looking for that "special" occasion to open the Ahren's Creek. The Schild shiraz is something I've bought before from the local bottle shops around Tas so it was a known quantity to me already (and I'm sure to many others) but that doesn't diminish it in any way, big bold and beautiful....

Do Warramate produce a cabernet at the $50 price point (a white label presumably)? I can't see anything like this on their website.

Yes, they do. I got some last time at $15/bottle (bordeaux bottle referring to the other post), have only had one so far and liked it very much

Anything with a Halliday rating is usually easy to figure out - you just go search in Wine Companion for region/variety/year/score/price.

At the risk of sounding peevish AC I don't subscribe to the Wine Companion (or any other pay-for-view site) so I'm not privy to that info, having said that, I'm, glad someone else does! I've just boomed on a case of this in lieu of the Epsilon Tempy that beefarmer has waxed ecstatic over, I've put my name down with VM for a heads-up if it comes back into stock again but I'm not holding my breath :(
 
The wine front is worth subscribing to. It is interactive and up to date, and the tasting notes are spot on.
Definitely. Nice balance between the three reviewers and their areas of interest.

User comments are excellent, quite a few winemakers and retailers post there regularly.
